27th GJA Awards: Atinka Media Village gets two nominations

The Atinka Media Village (AMV) has won two nominations for the 27th Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) Media Awards.

The two categories are Gender and Best Radio Programme of the Year- Ghanaian Language.

The winners were selected by the nine-member Award Committee, Chaired by Madam Betty Appau Oppong, former Director of Television at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC).

The committee was tasked to review submissions from members and select winners in 34 categories to be recognized at this year’s media awards.

They were also tasked to select the winner of the ultimate prize, P. A. V. Ansah Journalist of the Year, Best Female Journalist of the Year, Most Promising Journalist of the Year, and Best Student Journalist of the Year.

The 27th Annual GJA Media Awards is scheduled to take place on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at the Accra International Conference Centre, at 3pm prompt.

The flagship annual event of the GJA is meant to celebrate professional excellence with awards in 34 competitive categories up for grabs.

The theme for this year’s awards is: “Leveraging media freedom to sustain the democratic and security architecture: The litmus test of Election 2024”.

Speaking at an event to announce the winners, GJA President, Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour congratulated all Award Winners for their dedication to media practice and telling the most impactful stories.

“Journalism is a social responsibility and you have demonstrated that social responsibility through your work. We commend you for that,” he said.

For those who submitted their work but did not win, he commended them for their confidence and encouraged them to keep pushing forward.

“Your effort to even submit your work for consideration is an act of bravery which you should be proud of.I urge you not to lose hope at all, who knows, next year by this time you may be part of the winners so it is important to keep on keeping on for there is light at the end of the tunnel,” he said.

Mr Dwumfour said the theme for this year’s awards is shaped by the importance that media freedom places on the advancement of democracy and the safeguarding of national security.

“The GJA believes that Election 2024 will serve as a litmus test for the democratic and security framework of the nation. The media therefore must play a significant role in guaranteeing success in this test, but only under a media freedom regime that is conducive to the process,” he said.

He thanked the Committee for completing its work within schedule, saying the GJA is impressed with the work they’ve done.

Mr Dwumfour urged all fellow media colleagues to drive the publicity of this year’s award.

“It is “our day” as we say in Ghana so let’s join forces and make this year’s event a memorable one. It is also an opportunity for fraternization and merrymaking since “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. Let’s all be present on Sunday,” he added.
