58th Training Course for Young African Journalists closes in Cairo

 

The 58th Training Course for Young African Journalists held in Egypt has come to an end.

At the closing ceremony, held at the National Radio and Television House of Egypt on Thursday, May 9, 2024, the participants were given certificates of participation.

Prior to that, the participants also took a one-day intensive media workshop at The American University in Cairo (AUC) where they were also honoured with a certificate of participation.

The three-week Training Course was organised by the Union of African Journalists in collaboration with the Supreme Council for Media Regulation in Egypt.

At the closing ceremony, the participants through their representatives expressed gratitude to the Union of African Journalists and the Supreme Council for organising such an impactful programme and allowing them to benefit from it.

They also made some recommendations to the organizers to improve the next sessions of the training.

The Deputy President of the Supreme Council for Media Regulation, Saleh El Salhi said African Journalists are very powerful and therefore they must believe in themselves.

He urged them to propagate the Agenda and ideas of Africa and not that of the Western World.

For his part, An Advisor to the Union of African Journalists (UAJ), Ambassador Ahmed Haggag who was filled with gratitude assured the participants of inculcating their recommendations in the next session of the training.

He urged the participants to continue to send stories to the Union to publish it on its website for the world to see it.

He also encouraged the participants to establish contacts with the Egyptian newspapers to exchange stories to forge ahead.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, the General Secretary of the Ghana Journalists Association Mr Edmond Kofi Yeboah expressed gratitude to the organisers of the training for the opportunity given to him and all participants of the training.

He urged participants who have made new friends from the training to keep the fire burning and not make the friendship a ‘nine-day wonder’.

Mr Kofi Yeboah also encouraged the Journalists to make good use of the knowledge acquired through the training.

He observed that the issue of migration, and child trafficking amongst cuts across many African Countries and therefore urged the Journalists to collaborate and or use their network to share ideas on how to tackle those challenges.

Mr Kofi Yeboah also advised participants to always remember their calling as Journalists and to also know that their calling is to serve the people and not to make money the centre of their profession.

Also, he encouraged them to write books and or memoirs, especially with the experiences they have, the people they meet, the places they have visited ét al to leave a legacy that would help address the challenges of the profession and not take all their knowledge into the grave.

 Training

The three-week training programme which is held every year was meant to build the capacities of journalists, enhance their skills, and allow them to network with other Journalists on the African Continent to share ideas.

It was also to create links between journalists from different African countries to enhance understanding and mutual awareness of the issues of the continent, what the continent is going through, and the political, economic, and development challenges the countries are facing.

The 58th edition of the Training which opened on Saturday, April 20, 2024, brought together 13 journalists from African countries to Cairo.

The participants included two journalists from Ghana, two from Nigeria, two from Morocco, two from Kenya, two from Tanzania, two from Congo Brazzaville, and one from Chad are expected to spend three weeks in Cairo.

In addition to the above, five Journalists from Egypt also joined the team to cover and participate in the training.

The participants were taken through a series of topics including,”Energies in Africa: Possibilities and Challenges, Freedom of the Press in Times of Conflict and Social Media, Mobile Journalism in the Newsroom, Political and Economic Empowerment of African Women, Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Security and Terrorism: New Global Challenges and Intra-Trade in Africa.”

Others were, “Development vision in Egypt within the last 10 years, Covering Conflicts between Professionalism and Politics and other important topics.”

Aside from the theoretical aspects, the participants visited remarkable tourist sites including the Citadel of Saladin, Khan El Khalily and Al Moez St, the Religious Complexe (Old Cairo), the Pyramids, and the Sphinx and as well enjoyed dinner on (Nile Cruise).

They also visited some notable Media houses in Cairo, the Media Production City, and also went to Alexandria City where they visited the Library of Alexandria, also the Museum of Egyptian Civilization in Cairo, amongst others.
