Akua Donkor: EC suspends printing of ballot; GFP has 10 days to nominate new leader

The Electoral Commission of Ghana has suspended the printing of presidential ballot papers following the demise of Madam Akua Donkor, the 2024 Presidential Candidate for the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP).

According to the commission, while the 1992 Constitution and Public Elections Regulations, 2020 (C.I. 127) are not clear on the process to follow in the event of the death of a presidential candidate, Article 50(4) of the Constitution provides a framework, allowing an additional ten-day period for nominations if a candidate dies before an election.

In a statement, the Commission said it has officially informed the Ghana Freedom Party to nominate a new candidate and submit their choice within the timeframe. The suspension of the printing of ballots reflects the Commission’s commitment to ensuring a fair process, Deputy Chairman of Operations Samuel Tettey stated.

The founder and flagbearer of the Ghana Freedom Party, Akua Donkor, passed away on Monday at 10 PM at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge Hospital), where he was on admission.

She was 83 years old.
