Ban on drumming and noise making starts May 15

The annual ban on drumming and noise-making within the Greater Accra Region takes effect on May 15, 2023.

The ban, which is enforced for a month, sets as the preparatory stage for the annual Homowo Festival of the Chiefs and people of  Ga- Mashie .

The ban requires silence and tranquility for more than a month after the ritual planting of the crops.

The Ga Traditional Council made the announcement at a press conference in Accra today.

The ban affects  communities such as  Ga Mashie, Korle Gonno, Dansoman, Sakaman, Malam, Gbawe, Bortianor, Ngleshie-Amanfro,  Kokrobite, Oshiyie, Obaakrowa, Kofi Kwei, Ahida, Papase, Pokuase, Amasaman, Saapeman, Achimota among others.

During the period, the usual form of worship is expected to be confined to the premises of churches and mosque.

Churches and Mosques are expected to refrain from using loud musical instruments or organizing events that are likely to bring about noise making.”

The Public Relations Officer of the Ga Traditional Council, Nii Lartey Anum Tetteh,  urged Ghanaians particularly those living in the jurisdictions where the ban is applied,  to respect the customs of the Ga people for the entire month.

During the period, the positioning of loudspeakers outside the premises of churches, mosques, and pubs are banned.

Roadside evangelists are to cease their activities during the period according to the Ga Traditional Council.

“ Apart from an identifiable task force that consists of AMA personnel, the Police Service, and Representatives from the Traditional Councils with tags, no other person or group of persons should be seen or found enforcing the abatement of noise in the metropolis,”
