Developing Women for Skills and Opportunity Initiative (DWoSO) has marked the International Day of the Girl Child with a resounding commitment to the empowerment of young girls.
The organization launched the Ringleaders Project, which brought together 55 girls’ school prefects from 22 schools in the Sekyere East District of the Ashanti Region.
This initiative aims to foster leadership, personal growth, and confidence among these emerging leaders.
Speaking on behalf of the Executive Director, Beatrice Antwiwaa, the Community Outreach Lead of DWoSO Initiative, highlighted the significance of International Day of the Girl Child, stating that it’s a day dedicated to recognizing the importance of the girl child, her human and educational rights, and a day to shed light on the challenges that girls face daily.
Mrs Antwiwaa expressed, “Girls are leaders and change-makers. DWoSO Initiative, with our focus on the wellbeing of women and girls, has decided to launch the Ringleaders program today in this district. The program is aimed at building the leadership capacities of Junior High and Senior High school leaders for effective leadership. It is my hope that you will leave here today with added knowledge on leadership and also leave here with very high self-esteem and confidence to lead any space you find yourself. We are ringleaders, and we are called to lead.”, she added.

The event’s chairperson, the District Girl Child Coordinator, Madam Jacklin Sarfo delivered a compelling acceptance speech on behalf of the District Education Director, William Breko Adjepong. She passionately encouraged all the school prefects present to pay keen attention to all the discussions and activities to serve as peer mentors for their fellow students. She stressed the role of these young leaders in shaping the educational environment and creating positive change.
The heart of the launch event was the immersive activities where the girls embarked on a transformative journey.
They were guided through a series of activities that covered essential topics like the foundational principles of leadership and the ethical considerations necessary for effective leadership.
The sessions also equipped them with the skills to communicate effectively and handle conflicts constructively.
The girls were introduced to strategies for setting goals and managing their time effectively to achieve their ambitions whiles they engaged in group activities aimed at self-discovery, fostering self-awareness, and personal growth.
Some participants took the opportunity to express their heartfelt appreciation to DWoSO Initiative for taking a keen interest in their growth and development. They recognized the importance of this initiative in equipping them with the skills and confidence needed to excel as young leaders.
The launch of the Ringleaders Project marks the beginning of an exciting journey for these 55 young school prefects.
As they immerse themselves in leadership principles and personal growth activities, the hope is that they will emerge as empowered and confident leaders capable of inspiring change not only within their schools but also in their communities.
