Reduce sentence for us – Family of Major Mahama Killers

The Family of killers of Ghanaian Soldier, Major Maxwell Mahama has appealed to the court to reduce the life imprisonment sentence of the killers to either 20 or 25 years imprisonment.

Twelve out of the 14 persons in the Major Maxwell Mahama murder trial were on Monday found guilty of the offence of murder and have been sentenced to life imprisonment.

That was after a seven-member panel returned a unanimous verdict of guilty against the assemblyman for the area, William Baah, Bernard Asamoah, aka Daddy; Kofi Nyarko, aka Abortion; Akwasi Baah, Kwame Tuffour, Joseph Appiah Kubi and Michael Anim.

The rest are John Bosie, Akwasi Baah, Charles Kwaning, Emmanuel Badu and Kwadwo Anim.

After the court brought out the ruling, it was reported that the families of the perpetrators have turned their homes to mourning grounds, calling on the government to have mercy on their children.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ama Gyenfa, Mr Kwame Nkrumah, an Uncle to the Assembly Member who is part of the 12 said the act was not intentional. He explained that a day before the incident, they were attacked by armed robbers.

On the day of the incident, he said they were doing communal labour when some alleged that they had seen a man with a gun and suspected him of being part of the robbers.

He admitted that when Major Mahama was ‘caught’, they should have sent him to the police but unfortunately, they took the laws into their own hands.

Per the video evidence, he said his nephew was not part of the people that lynched Major Mahama, saying he was rather on his way to report the slain soldier to the police.

“We know the law must work but we are pleading with the court, the Government and all Ghanaians for a reduction of the sentence because it is very harsh,” he said.
