Roman Fada Applauds Ablakwa, Gov’t for Rollout of Chip-Embedded Passports

The Flagbearer of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), Philip Appiah Kubi, popularly known as Roman Fada, has commended the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and the government for introducing a new chip-embedded passport for Ghanaians.

Describing the initiative as forward-thinking and innovative, Roman Fada lauded the move as a true reflection of the government’s commitment to digitalization and national development.

“I really commend the Minister for Foreign Affairs for this great initiative, which would go a long way toward boosting the government’s digitalization drive and also promoting development,” – Roman Fada said in a media engagement.

The new chip-embedded passport was officially unveiled by Minister Ablakwa at the Passport Office in Accra on Monday, April 28, 2025.

According to the Minister, the upgraded passports, which come with 175 security features—compared to 32 on the old biometric passports—will completely replace the previous versions.

As part of the rollout ceremony, the Chief of Staff, Mr. Julius Debrah, was presented with his new chip-embedded passport.

The enhanced passports, which began distribution on December 2, 2024, are designed to meet international standards and incorporate Ghanaian cultural elements, including iconic Adinkra symbols, to highlight the nation’s identity.

Minister Ablakwa stated that the move is also aimed at eliminating middlemen and promoting greater transparency in passport acquisition processes.

The rollout is part of a broader government strategy to enhance security in travel documentation, modernize public services, and project a technologically advanced image of Ghana on the global stage.
