The Second Deputy Minority Chief Whip, Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaib, has said Apostle Dr. Eric Nyamekye is one of the people he respects most in the world, following the Church’s decision to stop baptism in some rivers due to pollution.
Speaking on Bullet TV’s Morning Target, Shaib said the directive shows how serious water pollution has become in Ghana, especially due to illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
He said the condition of many rivers has worsened over time. According to him, water bodies that were once brown have now become heavily polluted, raising concerns about public health and religious practices like baptism.
Shaib criticised government efforts to fight galamsey, saying earlier promises to take strong action, including a possible state of emergency, have not been fulfilled. He expressed disappointment that the situation has not improved.
He also raised concerns about the health impact of polluted water. He cited warnings from medical experts and referenced statements made during World Kidney Day, where it was revealed that about 400,000 Ghanaians are suffering from kidney-related diseases. He said many of these cases may be linked to contaminated water.
Hon. Ahmed Shaib stressed that the fight against galamsey must be taken seriously to protect both the environment and the health of Ghanaians.
