The Ayawaso North Municipal Assembly has announced plans to reassess beneficiaries of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme to confirm their continued eligibility.
LEAP is a cash transfer programme introduced in 2008 to support extremely poor and vulnerable households by improving household consumption, access to healthcare, education and other social services.
The programme, managed by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, currently supports over 350,000 households nationwide.
In the Ayawaso North Municipality, only two households with six beneficiaries from Alidu and Maamobi have been enrolled in the programme since 2018.
Beneficiaries receive grants every two months.
The Assembly explained that although LEAP requires beneficiary households to be reassessed every four years, no reassessment has been carried out in recent years.
The Department of Social Welfare and Community Development has therefore announced that a reassessment and validation exercise will begin next week, with the exact date to be communicated later.
The exercise aims to ensure that the programme continues to benefit those who truly qualify.
