The Government of Ghana has officially expressed its condolences following the passing of the Overlord of Dagbon, His Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II, describing his death as a monumental loss to the people of Dagbon and the country at large.
In a statement issued by the Presidency Communications Office on Monday, July 13, 2026, President John Dramani Mahama conveyed the nation’s profound sorrow over the demise of the revered traditional ruler, while extending heartfelt sympathies to the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon, and all Ghanaians mourning his passing.
“The Government of Ghana has received with profound sadness the news of the passing of His Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II,” the statement said.
On behalf of the government, President Mahama expressed his deepest condolences to the bereaved family and the entire Dagbon Kingdom, acknowledging the grief that has accompanied the loss of one of Ghana’s most respected traditional leaders.
The government paid glowing tribute to the late Yaa Naa, describing him as a distinguished traditional ruler whose reign was marked by healing, reconciliation and enduring peace in Dagbon following years of conflict.
According to the statement, Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II played a pivotal role in fostering unity and stability within the kingdom, creating an atmosphere that supported development and strengthened relationships between traditional authorities and the state.
His commitment to the welfare of his people, the statement noted, helped create an enabling environment for progress not only in Dagbon but across Ghana.
“The Government pays tribute to the life and legacy of Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II and honours his invaluable service to the nation,” the statement added.
It further stated that the late King’s wisdom, exemplary leadership and unwavering dedication to peace would continue to inspire future generations of leaders and serve as a lasting example of selfless service to the nation.
The government also acknowledged the enduring partnership that the late Yaa Naa fostered between the traditional institution and the government, describing it as instrumental in advancing development initiatives in the Dagbon area.
As tributes continue to pour in from across the country, the government joined the people of Dagbon in celebrating the late monarch’s remarkable legacy while praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
“May his soul rest in perfect peace,” the statement concluded.
