The Gulkpegu Palace has cautioned media houses in Tamale against irresponsible reporting and commentary that could undermine peace and trigger conflict in the area.
The warning was issued at the Gulkpegu Naa’s Palace by the Secretary to the Gulkpegu Palace, Kpalung Zobogu Naa Rashad Mohammed, on behalf of the elders.
Naa Rashad expressed concern about what he described as unprofessional conduct by some media practitioners, particularly in their handling of sensitive issues.
He urged journalists and media houses to exercise caution and ensure that their platforms do not inflame tensions or create divisions within the community.
He disclosed that the Gulkpegu Traditional Authority would invite general managers and heads of programmes of media houses in Tamale to the palace to discuss concerns about media content and its impact on peace and stability.
While acknowledging the constitutional right to freedom of expression, Naa Rashad stressed that the freedom comes with responsibility, especially when reports could threaten public peace.
He warned that media houses that persist in promoting conflict rather than peace could face action from the Traditional Authority, including moves to seek their closure.
The palace urged media practitioners to uphold professional standards, verify information before publication and ensure that their reporting promotes peace and development in Tamale.
