Ghana is set to host a high-level side event on reparatory justice in New York on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, on the sidelines of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
The event will provide an opportunity for Ghana to receive progress reports from three global mechanisms established following the country’s High-Level Next Steps Conference on Reparatory Justice held in Accra in June.
The conference was convened as a follow-up to the landmark UN General Assembly Resolution A/RES/80/250, which recognised the trafficking of enslaved Africans and racialised chattel enslavement of Africans as the gravest crime against humanity.
Following the Accra conference, Ghana established three key mechanisms to advance the reparatory justice agenda: a High-Level Global Advisory Council on Reparatory Justice, a Global Expert Panel on the Restitution of Cultural Heritage and a Global Legal Panel on Reparatory Justice.
The panels are expected to provide strategic, technical and legal guidance on efforts to advance reparations, restitution and justice for Africans and people of African descent worldwide.
The September 23 side event will focus on the progress made by the panels since their establishment and provide a platform for further discussions on the next steps towards reparatory justice.
Ghana says the gathering will also seek to deepen international dialogue and encourage countries to support efforts aimed at addressing the historical and continuing consequences of the transatlantic slave trade and racialised chattel enslavement.
The event will be held during the high-level segment of the 81st UN General Assembly, with Ghana positioning the gathering as another step in its efforts to advance the global reparatory justice agenda.
Ghana is expected to use the occasion to highlight the work undertaken since the Accra conference and rally international support for justice, restitution and dignity for Africa and people of African descent worldwide.
