The National Division of the Senior Staff Union (SSU) and Junior Staff Union (JSU) of the Electricity Company of Ghana Ltd. (ECG) have announced a series of actions in protest against the government’s intended privatization of the power distribution company.
In a statement signed by SSU Chairman, Bro. Christopher Apawu, and JSU Chairman, Bro. Larry LuckyAgboka, the unions said the National Executives Council (NEC) had earlier approved a series of actions to oppose the proposed privatization.
Following the mandate from the NEC, the National Division has directed all members to begin the first phase of the action with the wearing of red armbands to work.
The directive took effect from Tuesday, September 15, 2026, and will remain in force until the unions announce their next course of action.
The unions have also instructed all branches to replace old red flags at their operational areas with new and larger flags.
According to the unions, the new flags should clearly communicate the reason for their hoisting, in line with the campaign against the intended privatization of ECG.
Branch executives have been tasked with ensuring that all members comply with the directives.
However, the unions stressed that members are expected to continue performing their normal duties while wearing the red armbands.
The latest action forms part of the unions’ broader opposition to the government’s proposed plans concerning the future ownership and management of ECG.
