Fish Farmers in Ghana have appealed to the government to quickly intervene and save their business from Chinese fish farmers.
According to them, the rate at which the Chinese are getting involved in the fish farming business in the country is scary, adding that the unfortunate development poses risk to the local market.
The National Vice Chairman of Association of Fish Farmers in Ghana, Nana Kwaku Siaw, speaking on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, said Chinese investors have huge equipment used for fish farming but the locals have virtually nothing to work with.
He said Ghanaian fish farmers are hit by difficulties as they import everything into the country themselves without government’s intervention or subsidy.
“One of the difficulties we are facing as Ghanaian fish farmers is lack of subsidy on the importation of fish farming materials,” he said.
“So, how can we compete with these Chinese investors who are importing their own materials into the country?” He quizzed. He said, due to this, Ghanaian farmers are forced to sell their produce at higher cost while the Chinese investors sell at a lower cost.
Nana Siaw, therefore, called on the government through the Fisheries Ministry and the Fisheries Commission to introduce subsidies on equipment imported into the country by fish farmers to sustain their businesses.
He said when that is done, more youth would be encouraged to invest in the business to reduce the unemployment rate in the country
