The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has signed the Electronic Levy, also known as the E-Levy into law.

The E-levy was passed on Tuesday, March 29, 2022 in Parliament.

After the E-Levy was passed, the Minority on Tuesday, March 29, 2022, gave an indication to contest the decision at the Supreme Court, saying it was passed without their participation.

Subsequently, on Wednesday, March 30, 2022, Minority Leader in Parliament, Haruna Iddrisu, and his colleagues; Mahama Ayariga and Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa dragged the Attorney-General to the Supreme Court over the approval of the Electronic Transactions Levy (E-Levy).

They contend that Parliament did not have the required number of at least, half of its members present when the controversial tax policy was approved.

They, thus, want the Supreme Court to declare that the said approval was contrary to law.

But delivering the 2022 State of the Nations Address on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday 30th March 2022, President Akufo Addo expressed joy over the passage of the controversial Electronic Levy.

He was of the belief that the E-Levy will make a significant contribution to revenue mobilisation and the management of the national economy.

“Despite the protracted and sometimes acrimonious nature of proceedings, I am happy that the House has, finally, found it possible to pass the E-levy Bill. I believe the levy is going to make a significant contribution to revenue mobilisation and the management of the national economy, and I want to thank Members of the House for making this possible,” He said.

Barely, two days after its passage, President Akufo Addo has signed the Bill into law, paving way for its implementation.

It has also been confirmed that its implementation will take effect in May, 2022.
