Thiago Silva: Chelsea sign former PSG defender on one-year deal

0

Thiago Silva has completed a move to Chelsea on a one-year deal after passing a medical on Thursday.

Chelsea have the option to extend the contract by a further year for the Brazil centre-back, who became a free agent following PSG’s Champions League final defeat to Bayern Munich.

The Ligue 1 club confirmed the 35-year-old’s exit on Thursday – despite last-ditch efforts by the Champions League runners-up to offer him a new deal.

Silva, who spent eight years with PSG after joining from AC Milan in 2012, is Frank Lampard’s sixth signing of the summer following the arrivals of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Malang Sarr and Xavier Mbuyamba.

“I am so happy to be joining Chelsea,” Silva said.

“I am delighted to be a part of Frank Lampard’s exciting squad for next season and I’m here to challenge for honours.

“See you soon Chelsea fans, I look forward to playing at Stamford Bridge very soon.”

With Chelsea keen to strengthen having been banned from signing players last summer, the London club could also complete a deal for Bayer Leverkusen forward Kai Havertz before the start of the new season.

Silva won seven Ligue 1 titles during his time in France, but leaves the club having failed to achieve the European success desired most in Paris.

Despite sealing a fourth-placed finish and qualification for next season’s Champions League, Chelsea struggled defensively throughout Lampard’s debut campaign in charge at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said: “We are delighted to be able to add a player of Thiago Silva’s proven world-class credentials to our squad.

“Having performed at the highest level for many years, we have no doubt his experience and quality will complement the many exciting talents we already have here.

“Thiago will be an excellent fit and we hope he can add some new trophies to his impressive list of honours.”

Agyapa deal is clean; nothing fishy – Ken Ofori Atta

The Minister for Finance,  Ken Ofori Atta, has rubbished assertions by the Minority in Parliament and other Civil Society Groups that government’s arrangements with Agyapa Royalties Company to leverage the country’s mineral royalties to secure  over one billion dollars, is a bad deal

Parliament has approved five agreements to allow a special purpose vehicle (SPV), Agyapa Royalties Limited, to leverage the country’s mineral royalties to secure about $1 billion.

However, some Civil Society Groups have kicked against the move, saying the deal lacks transparency and an attempt by some government officials to milk the country.

But speaking to the press yesterday, Mr Ken Ofori-Atta, maintained that the deal   will place government in a better position  to leverage the country’s mineral royalties to finance large infrastructural projects, especially in mining communities.

“This deal is not hasty; it is not rushed; and not shrouded in any secrecy because we have been working at it since 2018. We are confident that Agyapa is going to be the largest company in Africa in the mineral royalty space and it is in the best interest of this country,” he clarified.

Parliament on August 14, 2020  approved the  agreements to enable  the country to enjoy  maximum value from its mineral resources. The approval includes  the Minerals Royalties Agreement, the Amended and Restated Minerals Royalties Investment Agreement and the relationship agreement among the government, the MIIF, Agyapa Royalties Limited and ARG Royalties Ghana

The rest are the assignment agreement between the MIIF and Agyapa Royalties Limited for the assignment of the right of the fund to Agyapa to receive the royalty value due from ARG under the investment agreement for the acquisition of the allocated minerals royalties from the Fund in consideration for shares to be issued by Agyapa to the Fund at an agreed price of $1 billion.

Per the agreement,  the country is expected to secure one billion dollars using Agyapa Royalties as a Special Purpose Vehicle to  finance large infrastructural projects. The company  will generate funds   from the capital market as an alternative to the conventional debt capital market transactions.

The funds will  be raised from the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) and the London Stock Exchange (LSE).

There is no ethnic agenda against Volta Region- Akufo Addo

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, says the Volta Region was not singled out for any special military operation in the run-up to the conduct of the voter registration exercise, and there was certainly no political or ethnic agenda.

According to President Akufo-Addo, despite the fact that deployment of the military personnel along the country’s borders was a nationwide exercise, and was done across all our borders and not in the Volta Region alone, for which the Minister for Defence and other Ministers gave detailed and clear explanations about the situation, the explanations did not appear to have satisfied some people.

This, the President said, was “because of the mischief that is so easily generated by some elements of social media, and also because of the season we are in, and the determination of some people to stir up ethnic sentiments in the hope of reaping some political advantage”.

Speaking at Keta, on Thursday, 27th August 2020, at a durbar held in his honour by the Awoamefia of the Anlo State, Togbui Sri III, he stated that there are currently 1,000 military personnel deployed along the country’s borders, of which 163 are deployed along the Volta Region border.

“This has been labelled a ‘military invasion of the Volta Region’. Togbewo, Mamawo, Volta Region is an integral part of the Republic of Ghana, and military deployments in a Region cannot be described as an invasion. Some elements of social media went into a frenzy, mostly with old videos taken in Accra and other parts of the world being passed off as residents of the Volta Region being brutalized by soldiers”, President Akufo-Addo said.

He continued, “This has been escalated into accusations of ethnic cleansing, and the Government that I lead has been labelled as tribalist. Whilst social media is a useful tool for information sharing, it can also be, and has been, used to magnify small incidents, place pictures, videos and voices out of context, or simply generate outright fabrications, in order to stir up needless ethnic animosity amongst citizens who are, otherwise, living peacefully with one another.”

The President noted that the easiest way to tell if people are being discriminated against by a government would be to look out for how the national cake is shared, adding that, on that score, his Government has been exceptional, as his Government has spread development projects equitably in all parts of the country.

“I dare say this area (Anloga) has done quite well under this Government. After years of demanding, an Anloga District has been created, and a new Assembly Complex is being constructed. There are numerous GETFund projects scattered all over Anloga, and Keta SHS’s is one which I am due to commission today. Important to me are two TVET projects in the Anloga district alone, one of which I shall be inspecting at Atorkor,” he stressed.

Additionally, the President indicated that there is the Keta landing beach project, construction of which commences in September, the €85 million facility for the Keta Water Supply rehabilitation and expansion project, and the Keta Harbour Project.

“We have not completed our development journey, but, surely, we are on the right path, and no one can accuse this government of discrimination in the distribution of the national cake,” President Akufo-Addo noted.

Recounting the history of the Danquah-Dombo-Busia political tradition, of which, currently, he is currently its flagbearer, the President told the gathering that, during the darkest days of the tradition, Party, it was here in the Volta that it drew its biggest strength.

“It was here in this region that people were most passionate about the political tradition. It was from here that the first people had to flee into political exile after independence, and it was in this Region that many chiefs had to flee into political exile, and some died there. Some of the consequences on the chieftaincy scene in the region have still not been properly resolved. It was from this region that people were sent into internal exile,” he said.

Many people, the President noted, forget that when J.B. Danquah, the first in the trinity of the Danquah-Dombo-Busia political tradition contested Kwame Nkrumah for the Presidency, on Ghana becoming a Republic in 1960, Danquah did not win in his home constituency in Akyem Abuakwa.

“But he won in two constituencies, one is right here in Anlo and the other is Ho West. Even if there was a little, brittle tribal bone within my makeup, which there is not, I would not choose the Volta Region as a target. History would not allow me,” he added.

Reiterating his commitment to the Ghana project, he urged all residents of the Volta Region to be guided by the fact that the enemy confronting the Ghanaian people is bad governance and poverty, and that is what he is spending his energy trying to defeat.

“It is a battle we can only win if we stick together and pull in the same direction, even if we have different perspectives. I am convinced we are set on the correct course, and I ask for your support to let us continue in peace with the transformation of Ghana. I assure you that I will do whatever it takes to ensure that the 7th December elections are free, fair, peaceful and transparent, so that the will of the Ghanaian people is made manifest,” he added.

Putin says he could send police to Belarus if necessary

0

Russian President Vladimir Putin says he has formed a police reserve force to intervene in Belarus if necessary, but that point has not yet been reached.

Speaking on Russian state TV, he said Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko “asked me to set up a certain police reserve” and “I have done so”.

“We also agreed that it won’t be used until the situation gets out of control,” he told Rossiya 1TV.

Mr Lukashenko’s disputed 9 August re-election triggered huge protests.

Mr Putin said Russia had an obligation to help Belarus with its security under the two countries’ close alliance, and he stressed the deep cultural, ethnic and linguistic ties between the two nations.

He said the new reserve force would not go into Belarus unless “extremist elements using political slogans as cover cross a certain boundary and start armed robbery, setting fire to cars, houses, banks, try to seize government buildings and so forth”.

He added that “on the whole, though, the situation now is levelling out”.

Soldiers vacate Dome Faase after two-day siege

0

Information reaching Atinkaonline.com is that military personnel who stormed Dome Faase, near Obom Domeabra to retaliate on behalf of their two colleagues who were brutalised by the residents have vacated the town.

This comes after a meeting between the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Ga South Municipal Asembly, Mr Joseph Stephen Nyarni and the leadership of the soldiers who stormed the town.

The soldiers, who also went to Dome Faase to search for their guns left on Thursday afternoon after finding the two guns.

The two soldiers who were allegedly assigned by their authorities to protect a parcel of land were brutalised by the residents of Dome Faase after being mistaken for land guards.

After the clash between the soldiers and the residents, about 300 soldiers were deployed to the area to bring sanity to the town, but they ended up arresting the people including some nurses in the town.

Their arrival sent almost all the men away from home, with most of them hiding in nearby bushes.

Meanwhile, residents who went into hiding have started going back home after the departure of the soldiers.
