MoU Signed Between Ghana and Grenada to Deploy Ghanaian Nurses

0

Ghana has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Grenada to support the recruitment of qualified Ghanaian nurses to serve in the Caribbean nation.

The MoU was signed during an official luncheon held at the Presidency in Accra, hosted by President John Dramani Mahama to honour the visiting Prime Minister of Grenada, Dickon Amiss Thomas Mitchell.

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and Grenada’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Trade and Export Development, Mr. Joseph Andall, executed the agreement on behalf of their respective governments.

President Mahama hailed the initiative as a meaningful opportunity for cooperation, noting that Grenada’s interest in Ghanaian nurses and allied health professionals reflects confidence in Ghana’s health training systems and opens new avenues for partnership.

“Ghanaian health workers have gained international recognition for their professionalism and compassion, and we are keen to explore arrangements that address both our national needs and Grenada’s health priorities,” He mentioned.

According to President Mahama, the maiden session of the Ghana–Grenada Political Consultations is expected to produce meaningful results that will strengthen bilateral engagements across political, economic, and cultural dimensions.

He highlighted that Ghana’s relationship with Grenada serves as a strong demonstration of South–South cooperation in action.

Recounting his earlier meeting with Prime Minister Mitchell, the President noted that both leaders had agreed to explore new areas of collaboration, particularly those that build on each country’s unique strengths for the benefit of their peoples.

President Mahama pointed out that education offers a rich avenue for collaboration between Ghana and Grenada — from teacher exchanges and student mobility programmes to shared research projects that drive innovation.

He further stressed the potential for partnership in agriculture, particularly in advancing climate-smart farming techniques, ensuring food security, and building stronger agribusiness networks.

On renewable energy, he said both countries could jointly champion clean and affordable energy solutions that support their long-term sustainability goals.

Addressing the importance of heritage and diaspora tourism, President Mahama proposed that Ghana and Grenada develop joint initiatives to strengthen cultural linkages, celebrate shared heritage, and foster economic growth through tourism.

Prime Minister Mitchell expressed satisfaction that his visit had reaffirmed the strong and enduring relationship between Ghana and Grenada.

He took the opportunity to acknowledge Sister Margaret Yemoah, a Ghanaian leading the New Life Organisation in Grenada, for her exemplary work in skills training and community development over the past decade and a half.

NPP Primaries: Kennedy Agyapong Leads NPP Poll with 53.8% – Researcher Dr. Evans Duah

Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, is currently leading the race to become the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential candidate, according to new polling data presented by researcher Dr. Evans Duah.

The poll, conducted between September 22 and October 5, 2025, sampled over 26,000 delegates out of a total of 204,893. It shows Agyapong ahead in both the worst-case (realistic) and best-case (projected) scenarios.

In the worst-case, Agyapong gets 44.11%, while his main rival, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, follows with 39.51%. In the best-case, Agyapong reaches 53.80%, crossing the 50%+1 mark needed to avoid a runoff.

Dr. Duah explained that the best-case projections consider undecided and silent voters, as well as second-choice preferences. “This is not a prediction, just a snapshot of where things stand,” he said.

Regionally, Agyapong leads in major vote-rich areas like Ashanti and Greater Accra, while Bawumia remains strong in Northern and North East. Agyapong is currently projected to lead in 11 out of 16 regions.

While other candidates—Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kwabena Agyeyi Agyapong—are gaining small amounts of support, the race remains clearly between Agyapong and Bawumia.

Dr. Duah concluded that Agyapong has the momentum, but with months left before the January primaries, “anything can still change.”

The residents say the poor infrastructure has made life unbearable, with dangerous potholes and the broken bridge posing serious risks to commuters and motorists alike.

Resurrection Power New Generation Church: Youths Call for Reform and Transparency

0

A group of concerned youth and members of the Resurrection Power New Generation Church is demanding sweeping reforms and increased transparency in the administration of the church following the death of its founder, Rev. Anthony Kwadwo Boakye.

At a press conference held in Accra, the group urged the current leadership to implement proper governance structures and to bar all suspended executives from participating in church activities. This, they say, is critical to restoring calm and rebuilding trust among the congregation.

The calls for reform follow a vote of no confidence in four executives of the church who have been accused of embezzlement and misappropriation of funds. The controversy has led to ongoing litigation as members push for accountability and a full financial audit.

Youth Leader Thelma Gyima addressed the media, calling on the church’s leadership to initiate a thorough audit of the church’s finances within 90 days. According to her, this will help ensure transparency and demonstrate the church’s commitment to good governance.

Convener of the group, Bright Asare Sampson, also appealed to security agencies to provide protection at the church’s premises to maintain peace and ensure the uninterrupted functioning of church services and activities.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to the spiritual and organizational well-being of the church and called on all members to support efforts aimed at reforming the institution.

NPP Primaries: Bawumia Promises World Class Development If Voted as President

Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has assured Ghanaians of world-class development under his presidency, pointing to his track record of innovation and technological advancement as Vice President as evidence of what is possible.

Dr. Bawumia gave the assurance as he wrapped up his campaign tour of the Bono East Region, where he visited all eleven constituencies. The final leg of the tour took him to Techiman North and South, where he interacted with party delegates and supporters.

Highlighting his achievements in government, Dr. Bawumia said Ghana had made major strides in digital transformation through initiatives such as the Ghana Card and Mobile Money Interoperability.

He noted that the Ghana Card had placed Ghana ahead of many advanced countries, including the UK, which is now seeking to introduce a similar national identification system.

However, Former Deputy Minister for Local Government and Rural Development and MP for Techiman South, Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah, called on New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates to rally behind Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, describing him as the most viable candidate to lead the party to victory in the 2028 general elections.

Shatta Wale’s Street Legacy Cemented at ShattaFest 2025

Last Saturday, Independence Square was on fire as ShattaFest, the brainchild of Ghana’s Dancehall king, Shatta Wale, delivered what could easily be one of the most unforgettable starts to the festive calendar.

In true Shatta fashion, his birthday bash became a citywide street celebration, pulling in thousands of fans from every corner of Accra and beyond—proof once again that no one throws a party quite like him.

The Street Crown crooner once again demonstrated his ability to draw massive crowds, as fans thronged Independence Square from Saturday night into Sunday morning for an unforgettable concert.

Shatta Wale’s influence was on full display, attracting thousands who sang, waved, and danced through the night. The event featured high-energy performances from leading Ghanaian artists including Samini, Sarkodie, King Promise, Medikal, Wendy Shay, and Amerado.

Additional acts such as Jupitar, Article Wan, Kelvynboy, JZyNO, Kweku Flick, and Patapaa also entertained the packed audience.

Shatta Wale added a romantic touch to ShattaFest 2025, sharing a warm moment with his partner, Maali, before delivering a powerful performance.

The event’s organization was exceptional, with meticulous planning translating into a sold-out crowd at Independence Square. Despite being a free show, ShattaFest drew thousands — a testament to Shatta Wale’s unmatched fan appeal.

Partnering with MTN MoMo Ghana Ltd, the Dancehall star proved once again that the creative arts are a valuable space for corporate investment.

The night also saw emotional highlights, including Shatta Wale’s tribute to industry veteran Tinny and the surprise joint appearance of Samini and Sarkodie — a moment of reconciliation that sent fans into a frenzy.

Then came one of the night’s more unexpected moments — Shatta Wale calling Peller and Big Jiggy, two known rivals, to the stage to make peace. The gesture drew loud applause and reminded everyone of Shatta’s power to unite.

But not everything went smoothly. Like most massive outdoor shows, ShattaFest had its tense moments, with reports of pepper spray, petty theft, and pockets of crowd congestion emerging as the night unfolded.

Ghana Eyes Windfall as Global Gold Prices Climb to $4,000/oz

0

The world commodities market had a historic milestone on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, when gold prices soared to an all-time high of $4,000 per ounce.

The surge, which has had a significant impact on gold-producing countries like Ghana, has sent shockwaves across financial markets due to growing geopolitical unpredictability, a declining dollar, and robust investment demand.

Because of strong inflows into gold-backed exchange-traded funds (ETFs), significant central bank purchases, and ordinary investors seeking protection from inflation and slowing global growth, the price of gold has risen 51% so far this year.

Since markets are still pricing in additional monetary easing through late 2025, analysts partially attribute the uptick to expectations of interest rate cuts by the US Federal Reserve.

Goldman Sachs predicts that the price of an ounce of gold might reach $4,900 in 2026.

The rise presents both chances and difficulties for Ghana, the top exporter of gold worldwide and the largest producer of gold in Africa. The price spike may increase export earnings, fortify foreign reserves, and draw in fresh capital for the mining industry.

But the nation’s protracted battle with gold smuggling could undo these advantages.

Illegal gold exports cost Ghana more than $11.4 billion in income between 2019 and 2023, according to a new Swissaid analysis.

More than 229 tonnes of gold have reportedly left Ghana illegally, routed through neighbouring states before reaching Dubai and other trade centres, a new study has found.

Despite reforms like the scrapped ASM export tax, smuggling persists, fuelled by corruption and lax border control.

Experts warn Ghana could lose billions in potential revenue if stronger oversight isn’t enforced, especially as the country battles rising debt and unemployment.

Ecozoil Champions Safety on Volta Lake As It Donates Life Jackets

0

Ecozoil Limited, a subsidiary of the Jospong Group of Companies, has taken a bold step toward enhancing safety on the Volta Lake with the donation of life jackets and educational materials to schoolchildren and residents of communities affected by the recent boat disaster that claimed 16 lives.

The donation, which came off at Kete Krachi in the Oti Region on Friday, October 17, 2025, formed part of the company’s broader commitment to promoting water transport safety and environmental sustainability under its Volta Lake Transport Safety Project (VLTSP).

Ecozoil

Led by the National Coordinator of the Project, Madam Yaa Ofriwaa, the Ecozoil delegation paid a courtesy call on the Oti Regional Minister, Hon. John Kwadwo Gyapong, to discuss strategies for improving safety on the Volta Lake and strengthening collaboration between the company and government agencies.

Ecozoil

Madam Ofriwaa explained that the Water Transport Safety Project, initially implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Transport in 2021, was designed to ensure safe travel on the lake, maintain cleaner water banks, and protect the lives and livelihoods of residents along the Volta Lake.

“Our passion to promote safety remains strong. We came here to sympathise with the affected families, distribute life jackets, especially to children and educate them on the importance of using them whenever they cross the lake. We are also appealing to government to reintroduce the project because it’s a public good. These communities deserve protection and sustainable livelihoods,” she said.

Ecozoil

She further noted that the absence of the project in recent years has led to increased sanitation challenges and waterborne diseases around the lake.

According to her, accident and sanitation incidents reduced significantly when the project was active, highlighting its positive impact on community safety and public health.

Ecozoil

Earlier, welcoming the team, the Oti Regional Minister, John Kwadwo Gyapong commended Ecozoil for its swift intervention and reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that enhance water transport safety and environmental management in the region.

“The system must be properly controlled and managed,” the Minister stated.

“Transport on the lake should be as organised as transport on land. With over 22 per cent of our landmark covered by water, a well-coordinated system can make the Volta Lake a safer, more vibrant hub for commerce and tourism,” he added.

Ecozoil’s donation and renewed call for partnership come at a crucial time, as communities along the Volta Lake continue to grapple with recurring accidents linked to overloading, lack of safety equipment, and inadequate enforcement of transport regulations.

The company reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to collaborating with government and other stakeholders to revive the Volta Lake Transport Safety Project, ensuring that every life on the lake is protected.

Portugal’s New Immigration Law Draws Backlash from Activists

Timoteo Macedo, head of the Immigrant Solidarity Association, cautioned that Portugal’s recently implemented restrictive immigration laws could hurt the country’s economy by driving away much-needed foreign labor.

Macedo warned that the new law, which tightens entry and residence criteria, is already changing migratory flows and not in Portugal’s favor. He made this statement after President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa approved it.

Brazil, India, Angola, Pakistan, Nepal, and other major migrant populations have seen a drop in arrivals, he claimed, adding that “citizens have stopped coming to Portugal and have started going to other countries.”

Portugal cannot afford to seal its doors, Macedo emphasized, despite the government’s argument that the measure is required to manage and limit migration.

“Portugal needs immigrants. To meet the goals of the Portugal 2030 plan and the Recovery and Resilience Program (RRP), more immigrants are needed, from Brazil or anywhere else,” he told Viory.

Facing labour gaps in construction, agriculture, hospitality, and care work, Portugal’s ageing population has made immigration essential to its economy.

But Macedo cautioned that tightening immigration rules too much could hurt growth, arguing that the economy still depends heavily on foreign labour.
