DSTV Saga: Highhanded Approach Hurting Government’s Image – Paul Twum-Barimah

0

Former Member of Parliament for Dormaa East, Hon. Paul A. Twum-Barimah, has added his voice to the growing public discourse on the government’s standoff with South African broadcasting giant Multichoice, cautioning that the government’s handling of the situation could hurt its credibility.

In a Facebook post, Paul A. Twum-Barimah criticized the approach taken by Communications Minister Sam George, describing it as lacking in “diplomacy, tact, and mutual respect.”

“DSTV denies claims by the communication minister on price reduction. This doesn’t look good for the Minister and the government at large,” – Twum-Barimah posted. “Engagements such as this require diplomacy, tact, and mutual respect—not highhandedness.”

Paul A. Twum-Barimah’s comments follow MultiChoice’s response to a 14-day ultimatum issued by Minister George, demanding a reduction in DSTV subscription prices.

The Minister addressed the media yesterday claiming DSTV has agreed to reduce prices, but, MultiChoice in a release debunked the claim.

While the company initially expressed openness to dialogue, it later clarified that it had not agreed to the government’s deadline or specific terms, sparking confusion and backlash.

Twum Barimah

Twum-Barimah’s remarks underscore a growing concern that the government’s confrontational tone may be undermining its own standing and damaging Ghana’s image as a reliable destination for foreign investment.

Need For Investors Doesn’t Mean We Allow Anything – Nana Yaa Jantua On Dstv Saga

0

Presidential staffer, Nana Yaa Jantuah, has waded into the ongoing standoff between the Government of Ghana and South African media giant Multichoice, stressing that the country’s need for foreign investment does not equate to tolerating disregard for national laws and consumer interests.

Speaking on JoyNews, Nana Yaa Jantuah backed Communications Minister Sam George’s strong stance against the company, saying that Ghana’s sovereignty must not be undermined in the name of attracting investors.

“The fact that we need the investor does not mean that we should allow anything to happen,” she stated firmly. “When you’re in a sovereign state, you must succumb to the rules, regulations, and actions of that sovereign.”

She referenced an earlier move by the presidency to cut ties with DSTV services at the Jubilee House, calling it a clear signal to Multichoice that all was not well.

“I thought the first time the President decided to cut the TV, it should have been a cue for them,” she said. “If you are in a country as an investor, and the Presidency decides not to use your product, what does it mean? It should have told them there is a problem.”

Nana Jantuah’s comments come amid heightened tensions after Communications Minister Sam George issued a 14-day ultimatum to Multichoice, operators of DSTV, demanding a reduction in subscription fees. The minister accused the company of charging Ghanaians significantly higher rates compared to consumers in other African countries.

While Multichoice initially hinted at a willingness to review pricing, it later clarified that it could not commit to the government’s deadline. This sparked public debate and raised concerns over potential damage to diplomatic relations with South Africa.

Presidential staffer Jantuah, however, insists that such matters must be viewed through the lens of national sovereignty and consumer protection, not merely diplomacy.

Ghana Must Tread Cautiously on Multichoice Saga – High Commissioner Warns

0

Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Benjamin Quarshie, has cautioned against an aggressive stance in the ongoing standoff between the Ghanaian government and South African media giant Multichoice, warning that such tensions ” doesn’t speak well for the country.”

Speaking in an exclusive interview with JoyNews, the diplomat urged calm and diplomacy in the wake of threats by Ghana’s Communications Minister, Sam George, to shut down DSTV operations if the company fails to cut subscription fees within a government-imposed 14-day deadline.

“It doesn’t speak well when it comes to our relations,” Quarshie said, referring to the escalating rhetoric. “South Africa is one of our biggest trading partners—possibly the second biggest—and we must tread cautiously. There are agreements we’ve signed, and we need to ensure these disputes don’t undermine the broader bilateral agenda.”

The standoff began after Minister George accused Multichoice of exploiting Ghanaian consumers through what he described as unreasonably high subscription fees compared to other countries in the region.

The minister demanded an immediate price review, warning that failure to comply would result in a regulatory clampdown, including the possible shutdown of Multichoice’s operations.

While Multichoice initially signaled a willingness to engage, the company later clarified that it could not meet the government’s timeline—fueling public backlash and sparking concerns over the diplomatic and trade fallout between the two nations.

Quarshie, who is Ghana’s top envoy in Pretoria, revealed that he had already begun receiving calls over the matter from concerned parties in South Africa.

“I have told them that there is no war,” he said. “We are not fighting. But we must be mindful—South Africa is a large economy, and there’s a lot we can learn from them. In all our actions, we must remember the bigger picture: trade, diplomacy, and Africa’s economic integration.”

Citing the Africa Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), the High Commissioner said conflicts like this could create dangerous precedents if not handled maturely. “We want to see Africa trade among itself. South Africa is a shining example of that ambition. We must not jeopardize that vision over a single dispute,” he added.

Communications Minister Not Acting in a Vacuum

Responding to suggestions that the Communications Ministry should soften its stance, Quarshie defended the minister’s actions but called for engagement over ultimatums.

“The Communications Minister is not operating in a vacuum,” he said. “He’s raising valid concerns about pricing policies in the subregion, where Ghanaians appear to be paying more for less. But Multichoice has also indicated operational costs they are incurring, which need to be factored in.”

He recalled that a similar confrontation with MTN—a South African-rooted telecom giant—was resolved amicably and expressed confidence that a similar outcome was possible in the current impasse.

“I can tell you confidently that South Africa does not want a trade war with Ghana. They want this resolved,” he said. “We will go to the minister and passionately appeal to him—this is the Africa we want, an Africa that resolves its issues through trade and diplomacy, not threats.”

A Diplomatic Tightrope

High Commissioner Quarshie also revealed that Ghanaian diplomats had recently undergone orientation based on a new diplomatic KPI structure aimed at boosting investment and trade. He acknowledged that the Multichoice dispute complicates these efforts.

“It becomes a bit challenging,” he admitted. “But I believe that President John Dramani Mahama’s administration is committed to resolving this, and in the days and weeks to come, we will see that.”

Youth of Manso Tontokrom prevent military invasion of their mining site

0

Hundreds of youth at Manso Tontokrom in the Amansie South district of the Ashanti Region have had a sleepless night after blocking the entry of military personnel to their mining site.

During the protest, the youth blocked the community’s entry road at the outskirts of the town, burning tires to symbolize their anger and frustration.

About 50 military personnel who arrived at the scene were not able to enter the community.

According to the youth, they have mined on their land for decades and are not ready to lose it to foreigners.

Speaking to Adom News, Richmond Osei, the leader of the youth group, said they are not involved in illegal mining, but rather community mining, which they accused Asanko Mines of using military force to bully them for the land.

“This large-scale mining company has been in Manso for years, and we haven’t witnessed any development from them. They’re leaving our youths unemployed and our community dusty. We won’t allow them to take over,” he lamented.

According to him, last year, there was a deadly clash that led to the death of one community member and two soldiers.

However, this time, they were peacefully protesting.

“We’re calling on the government to intervene and settle this issue once and for all because there’s no way we’re going to give the land to them,” he said.

During the protest, the youth invoked the gods with schnapps, eggs, and fowls to curse the people behind the military invasion.

The military personnel left the scene after some minutes without harming anyone.

Currently, the Tontokrom community is calm, and people have returned to their businesses.

Withdraw ‘reckless’ Bawku Chieftaincy allegations – Mamprugu Youth to Ken Agyapong

0

The Mamprugu Youth Association (MAYA), Bawku Chapter, has called on Kennedy Agyapong and his spokesperson, Kwasi Kwarteng, to retract comments alleging that former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia imposed a rival chief on the people of Bawku during an election period.

In a statement issued on Thursday, September 4, the group condemned the claim as “reckless, malicious, and dangerous,” warning that it risked inflaming the already volatile Bawku chieftaincy dispute.

MAYA argued that the allegation, which it said was first circulated by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) during the 2024 election campaign, was now being “shamelessly recycled” by Mr Agyapong and his team.

“It is disgraceful that Mr. Kennedy Agyapong and his spokesperson, who claimed to support the NPP candidate in that election, are now resurrecting the same propaganda,” the statement read.

The association stressed that the Bawku conflict should never be exploited for political purposes, describing such actions as “a direct insult to the people of Bawku and the entire Mamprugu Kingdom.”

MAYA demanded a full and unqualified apology and retraction, cautioning that failure to comply would force them to declare Mr Agyapong’s campaign team persona non grata in the area.

“We will not allow any individual, no matter how highly placed, to trade the peace of Bawku for political expediency. The future of our people is far more important than the desperation of politicians,” the group stated.

15 Killed in DR Congo by An Ebola Outbreak

The health ministry of the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reported that a new Ebola outbreak has killed at least 15 individuals. According to the ministry, the virus was found in a 34-year-old pregnant woman who was hospitalized last month after exhibiting symptoms like a high temperature and frequent vomiting.

She passed away from multiple organ failure a few hours later.

This will be the 16th epidemic of the fatal virus in the large central African state, which is plagued by violence in the east and has inadequate health services.

The ministry reported that 28 suspected cases were reported in the most recent incident, which occurred in central Kasai province.

Prompt handwashing and social distance in high-risk regions are two preventive measures that officials have called for rigorous adherence to.

Officials reported that tests had revealed the Zaire form of Ebola, an uncommon but frequently fatal illness.

Essential Information Regarding Ebola

“Acting with determination to rapidly halt the spread of the virus and protect communities” is what the World Health Organization (WHO) declared it was doing.

the report states that 15 people had perished, including four medical personnel.

“Case numbers are likely to increase as the transmission is ongoing. Response teams and local teams will work to find the people who may be infected and need to receive care, to ensure everyone is protected as quickly as possible,” WHO emphasised in a statement.

“Effective to protect against this type of Ebola,” the international health organization claimed, DR Congo has a “stockpile of treatments” that included 2,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine.

Three years ago, the latest Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo killed six individuals.

An even deadlier outbreak that killed over 2,000 people occurred in 2018–20.

The virus was initially discovered in 1976 close to the Ebola River in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is believed to have started in fruit bats.

When someone with Ebola comes into direct touch with another person’s blood, vomit, feces, or body fluids through damaged skin, the mouth, or the nose, they become infected.

TDC Sacks NPP Tema Central Secretary Over Alleged Sale of State Land to Wife

0

The Tema Development Company (TDC) has terminated the appointment of Mr. Ian Okwei, the Constituency Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in Tema Central, over allegations of illegal land dealings and conflict of interest.

According to TDC’s Managing Director, Courage Makafui Nunekpeku, Mr. Okwei was found to have sold a parcel of government land on which a public toilet serving residents of Tema Community Five was situated to his wife at a cost of just GH¢2,000.

Mr. Nunekpeku further alleged that the embattled NPP secretary was part of a syndicate within TDC involved in questionable transactions that dented the company’s reputation. He noted that since initiating an audit into land transactions over the past eight years, he has faced unwarranted media attacks allegedly instigated by individuals who benefitted from such deals.

“Under my administration, TDC has retrieved several lands that were dubiously sold in the past, including parcels at Communities 23 and 25, which were originally allocated for public purposes but were diverted into private hands,” Mr. Nunekpeku stated.

In response, Mr. Ian Okwei has denied the allegations, describing them as politically motivated. He insists the land in question was not illegally sold to his wife as being speculated. He said, a legal offer was made with requisite payment constituting acceptance and consideration from the company, and for that he wonders how that could be termed as illegal when he is not a management member to influence such a transaction.

Mr. Okwei added that he has instructed his lawyers to take legal action to protect his reputation and hold his accusers accountable.
