Ministry of Health sacks Ankaful Hospital Director

0

The Ministry of Health has sacked the Director of the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital, Dr. Eugene Dordoye.
The decision was arrived at after an emergency meeting Friday between the Ministry and the medical director.

The nurses and physician assistants at the facility withdrew their services earlier this week, and demanded that Dr. Dordoye’s appointment be terminated because he was “an oppressor who was psychologically traumatizing the staff and mismanaging the hospital”

The Public Relations Officer at the Ministry of Health who confirmed the dismissal of Dr Dordoye on Citi FM said a new director will take over next week.

“It was at a meeting that this came out. Dr. Dordorye was with us at the meeting and we all agreed that he should give way for another person to act on his behalf…As time goes on, another person will take over from him,” said Mr. Cudjoe.

Meeting called off

The Health Ministry early on called off a meeting with the striking nurses after they turned down an invitation by the sector Minister, Mr Kweku Agyemang- Manu.

The leadership was pessimistic that the meeting with the Minister would yield any results.

Speaking with the Daily Graphic, the Local Secretary of the Psychiatric Nurses Group (PNG), Mr Malcolm Akatinga Ali, said since the impasse the executive was invited six times by the Minister but those meetings did not yield any positive results.

“We regrettably, wish to state that since the impasse between us and the Director of the Hospital, Dr Eugene Dordoye, the Minister has not visited the hospital to acquaint himself with the development on the grounds”, he said.

Strike

Psychiatric nurses and assistants at the Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital in Cape Coast on Thursday began a strike to back their demand for the immediate removal of Dr Eugene Dordoye as the Director of the Hospital.

When Daily Graphic visited the hospital today (Friday), the situation remained the same- nurses and physician assistants had deserted the facility.

The group maintained that Dr Dordoye should be removed from the hospital and be given the requisite training in human resource management and effective leadership, as had been suggested by the fact-finding committee, before he returned to run the hospital.

KSM's letter to doomsday prophets

OPEN LETTER TO THE MIGHTY PROPHETS

Dear mighty and powerful prophets of Ghana. I know God talks to you directly when you are "in the spirit"as you put it.
I beg o. I have one small request.

Please next time you are in the spirit and God talks to you, I beg o, can you ask him to tell you how Ghana can fix the unemployment wahala. I beg, many of our youth are looking desperately for jobs. I want GOD to give you a prophecy on how to fix that. Then come and prophesy.

Kindly ask God to tell you how we can make Ghana a great nation. I beg o, please ask God how we can make our economy great wai. When he or she tells you, then come and give us some prophecy on Ghana becoming a great nation.

Finally, tell God, that I plead with him or her in all humility, that he should stop telling you ONLY about how and when people will die. Tell God, that I respectfully speak on behalf of many Ghanaians when I say that we are tired of our mighty prophet's obsession with people who are going to die.

If I may be bold for a second, its your fault God. Today you reveal to them that an important King about to die, next you reveal to them that many journalists are going to die, then you tell them many celebrities are about to die… we even heard that you revealed that one of the first ladies was going to die. Oh God, I beg, can't you give them something else to tell us that will EMPOWER US? We need it God. There is so much negativity and hopelessness, we need something to UPLIFT US.

Please I mean no disrespect but we are sick and tired of all these PROPHETS OF DOOM!!!!

This is my small request.

NPP private sector oriented, we don’t believe in indiscriminate taxes – Dep finance Minister

0

The Deputy Finance Minister, Kwaku Kwarteng, says the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government is private sector oriented hence the decision to cut the special petroleum tax.

The Ministry of Finance reportedly laid a Special Petroleum Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2018 that seeks to reduce the Special Petroleum Tax of 15 percent to 14 percent to help reduce the prices of petroleum, which in recent times, have seen upward adjustment.

The Special Petroleum Tax Bill was introduced by the immediate past National Democratic Congress (NDC) government in 2016 to shore up revenues generated from fuel prices when crude oil prices were low.

Speaking to Ekourba Gyasi on Atinka AM Drive, Deputy Finance Minister, Kwaku Kwarteng explained that erstwhile Mahama administration were interested in taxes even though they had no projects to fund unlike the NPP which has free SHS among others to fund.

He said the NPP would have scrapped all taxes if they had the opportunity.

Probe GWCL desalination contract- Group demands

0

The Concerned Ghanaian Association is calling on the government to commence investigation into the award of contract for the construction of the Desalination Plant in Teshie.

The $125m desalination plant was constructed in 2015 to desalinate 60,000m3 of sea water a day providing fresh water to more than 300,000 people in various municipalities of the Greater Accra.

The plant was being operated by Befesa Desalination Developments Ghana, a joint venture of Abengoa Water Investments Ghana, Daye Water Investment (Ghana), and local partner Hydrocol.

However, government through the Ghana Water Compnay  shut down   the  Teshie desalination plant  in January to allow for the renegotiation of the contract.

The group in a statement commended government for suspending contract since the  country was losing an amount of $1.5million every month as a result of the contract between Ghana water and Messrs Befesssa Ghana limited.

“Government must take a critical look at how much the company lost as a result of the deal because  when Befessa was selling water to GWCL in bulk at $1.50, an equivalent of GHc6.75 per cubic meter, which they in turn were compelled to sell to the public at GHc1.47 per cubic meter,” it said in a statement.

Below is the full statement:

CONCERNED GHANAIANS  COMMEND GOVERNMENT FOR SHUTTING DESALINATION PLANT

The Concerned Ghanaian Association wishes to express our sincere gratitude to government for the bold step it has taken to shut down the desalination plant for the people of Teshie to start enjoying potable water.

As opinion leaders  in the community, our ears never went to sleep ever since the commissioning of the Desalination Plant, with constant complaints of health disorders affecting the various localities in our community, for which we deemed appropriate to let the government and people of Ghana know what we were going through on daily basis.

We have always maintained that given the quantum of fresh water sources we have in Ghana, the decision to embark on the desalination technology could be best described as myopic and corporate wickedness.

The proponents of the desalination technology did not care of the consequences on the people of Teshie. Concern Ghanaians therefore is of the view that their only consideration was what they stood to benefit from the project.

Now that the plant has been shut down we wish to urge government to as matter of urgency commission an investigation on both present and past officials of the company who gave the green light for the project.

Government of Ghana was losing an amount of $1.5million every month as a result of the contract between Ghana water and Messrs Befesssa Ghana limited.

Government must take a critical look at how much the company lost as a result of the deal because when Befessa was selling water to GWCL in bulk at $1.50, an equivalent of GHc6.75 per cubic meter, which they in turn were compelled to sell to the public at GHc1.47 per cubic meter.

We are informed that, GWCL is under obligation to pay some GHc11.6 million as capacity charge under the contract.

The scale of reaction to the deal shows that the concerns of Ghanaians are reaching a boiling point.

The president who happens to be an anti-corruption crusader must reciprocate the goodwill he is enjoying from Ghanaians who generally gave him the mandate in 2016 based on the change mantra by thoroughly investigating the desalination deal.

‘Black Panther’ criticized for lack of LGBT representation

0

Marvel Studios’ upcoming blockbuster Black Panther has been criticized for its lack of LGBT representation, and the particular exclusion of a lesbian scene featured in the comic book on which the superhero film is based.

According to Pink News, “When the film was announced, fans were excited by the prospect of Okoye and Ayo, two of the title character’s bodyguards, getting together as Ayo and fellow female warrior Aneka do in the comics. And these hopes were encouraged by reports that an early screening of the film featured Walking Dead star Danai Gurira’s Okoye staring at Ayo flirtatiously as the two danced.”

However, when fans of the comics watched Black Panther during early screenings, they noticed an absence of lesbian romance, and immediately started a Twitter campaign under the hashtag #LetAyoHaveAGirlfriend, using terms such as “lesbian erasure.”

In response, Black Panther co-writer Joe Robert Cole claimed, “I know that there were quite a few conversations around different things, different directions with different characters, and characters that we may have.”

“We thought: ‘Well, maybe we’ll work it this way with an arc or work it that way with an arc’,” he explained, adding, however, that he didn’t “remember” the scene where Okoye allegedly looked at Ayo “flirtatiously.”

“I can’t remember the exact exchange you’re talking about, but I think it was really brief. I’m not sure,” Cole said. “I know that it was not – there wasn’t some major theme through that we were looking to explore with that in terms of the story. We didn’t like, pull out a full thread of some theme.”

The Advocate, a popular LGBT magazine, also criticized the lack of LGBT representation in Black Panther, publishing a video titled, “What About LGBT Representation in Black Panther?” in which Cole’s “vague” reply, when asked about the exclusion of LGBT characters, was also criticized.

“Many were hopeful for LGBTQ representation in Marvel’s Black Panther,” the outlet said. “Some suspected a lesbian romance between Danai Gurira’s Okoye and Florence Kasumba’s Ayo. However most of their flirtatious scene was cut from the film.”

“The very few LGBTQ characters in past Marvel films have been either closeted or unmentioned,” the Advocate concluded. “It seems Black Panther won’t be breaking that mold.”

In a recent article, io9 claimed, “This isn’t the first time that Marvel Studios have missed a readily-available opportunity to finally bring some queer representation to the big screen, but it’s particularly odd given how right there and on the page this particular story is when you look to the comics.”

Disney, the studio behind Black Panther, has also faced pressure as a petition urges the studio to donate 25 percent of Black Panther‘s profits to the black community.

This week, actress Vivica A. Fox expressed support for the petition, which has received over 6,000 signatures, and accuses the Walt Disney Company and Marvel of exploiting the black community through specific marketing in an attempt to make money.

Last week, after a single movie critic gave Black Panther a negative review, that critic received a wave of harassment and criticism on Twitter.
