Bawumia commissions 100km of Kumasi inner city roads

The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has commissioned the 100km Rehabilitation and Auxiliary Infrastructure of Kumasi Inner Ring Road and Adjacent Streets Project – Phase 1, for which he cut sod on 13th December, 2019 at Kentenkrono in the Oforikrom Municipality.

This brings the total number of kilometers of completed roads constructed by the Akufo-Addo administration since 2017 to 1,180.2. This figure is more than double the 503.44 kilometers of road constructed in the region between 2009 and 2016.

The 100km Rehabilitation and Auxiliary Infrastructure of Kumasi Inner Ring Road and Adjacent Streets Project – Phase 1 was undertaken with the primary objectives of enhancing intra-urban traffic flow, reducing the incidence of flooding, dust pollution and other negative environmental effects associated with the poor road network, according to the Ministry of Roads and Highways.

Authorities of the Urban Roads Department say the completion of the project has improved accessibility within Kumasi especially for the beneficiary communities in Asokwa, Bantama, Nhyiaeso, Manhyia, Oforikrom, Kwadaso, Tafo Pankrono, Subin, and Suame.

Speaking at the Commissioning on Monday, August 1, 2022, Vice President Bawumia said the completion of this project, as well as the many completed and ongoing, is evidence of the Government’s commitment to improving the road infrastructure across the country, especially in the Ashanti region.

“The completion of this project is so important to Government since we shall be adding 100km of rehabilitated roads to the network in Kumasi.

“Apart from the roads we are commissioning today, let me state some of the Works that Government is undertaking in Ashanti, under the Road Agencies under the Ministry of Roads and Highways:

Records
“The Department of Urban Roads (DUR) has successfully completed the asphalt overlay of 295km of roads in the Ashanti region since 2017. The sod was cut on 25th March 2022, with works 10% complete.

Ghana Highway Authority
The GHA has undertaken the rehabilitation and upgrading of 264 km of roads since 2017, the Vice President disclosed, with the roads either at primer seal stage or have the full seal on them. In addition, 28km of critical roads are at Asphaltic binder stage in the region.
As well, the Department of Feeder Roads has completed about 342km of roads since 2017. Some of the roads completed and tarred include Poano-Ntinnanko Feeder Road (6km); Barekese-Fufuo-Adugyama Feeder Road (10km); Ahenkro-Boamag Feeder Road (11km); Upgrading of Menang Junction-Menang-Dotom Feeder Road (15km); and Bitumen Surfacing of Fiankoma-Hia Feeder Road (14.5km).

Assuring the region of Government’s continued commitment to improving road infrastructure, Vice President Bawumia emphasized:
“There are currently a lot of road works at various stages of completion in the region and we intend to ensure that they are all completed. I am happy to inform you that Parliament has approved the construction of the Suame Interchange- Phase1. Works are expected to start by September 2022.
I know you are also eager to hear about the Boankra Inland Port. I am happy to report that the contractor has moved to site for work to begin this month,” he added.

NIA to deliver printed Ghana cards to people in their homes

The Acting Head of Corporate Affairs at the National Identification Authority (NIA), Dr Abudu Abdul-Ganiyu has stated that with support from Parliament and District Chief Executives, Officials of the NIA will start going round communities to distribute printed Ghana cards to owners in their homes.

He also said the NIA will publish names of cards that have been printed so that the owners will know where to go for them.

This is due to the fact that some persons have complained that they are unable to go to the district offices to collect their cards due to distances.

The SIM registration exercise began on October 1, 2021 and was expected to end on March 31, 2022.

As of 17th March, 14,091,542 SIM Cards had been linked to the Ghana Card, 10,348,532 Bio-Captures conducted and 99,445 New SIMs registered.

The Minister of Communications and Digitalisation, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful said due to a number of factors including the fact that over 7.5 million citizens and residents are yet to obtain Ghana Cards to enable them register their SIM cards, it was clear that the deadline for completion of the registration of the remaining active SIM cards could not be met.

The deadline for the registration of Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) cards using details of the Ghana Card was therefore extended to July 31, 2022.

But on July 31, 2022, the deadline for the sim card re-registration exercise was extended to September 30, 2022, following public outcry.

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Dr Abudu Abdul-Ganiyu said,” Some people are saying that the district offices are far and so they cannot go for their printed cards, we have spoken to Parliament to grant us help. When they give us the help, we will collaborate with them and the District Chief Executives. We will go round with the cards in the communities, so that we can get closer to the people and issue the cards to them. Going forward, we will publish a list of people whose cards have been printed and are being kept at the district offices to enable the owners go for them.”

Meanwhile, he said all the 292 NIA offices are still open to the public, urging all to take advantage of the extension period.

“The way forward is that we all have to sensitise Ghanaians that they should not wait till the deadline, they have a period of two months and so those who have not done it should take advantage of the 292 NIA operational offices across Ghana. We have NIA offices in all districts, we have created offices in every constituency, so people should take advantage and go to those offices to register their Ghanacards. Those who have also registered already should go to the offices to pick up their cards,” he added.

Kidnappers of Nollywood actors make contact, demand $100,000– Guild

0

Twenty-four hours after prominent Nollywood actors and members of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Cynthia Okereke and Clemson Cornel, were kidnapped in an Enugu suburb, their abductors have contacted their families.

The actors were reported missing after their family members confirmed they didn’t return home from a film location at Ozalla Town, Enugu state, on Thursday.

Both actors are renowned for starring in movies shot in Enugu and Delta states.

On Saturday, the AGN national president, Emeka Rollas, told Premium Times that the kidnappers are requesting a lump sum in dollars.

He said, “the kidnappers have made contact with the families and are demanding the sum of $100,000. We pray to God for his intervention and for Him to put confusion in their midst.”

“We are also working closely with the different security operatives, but we are not sure what to expect from them because the same thing is happening everywhere in the country.”

Mr Rollas also said members of the Guild are working closely with the families of the victims and the security forces to ensure their safe release.

In a Punch newspaper interview published Saturday, Mr Rollas said, ‘‘the kidnappers cleared the monies in Cynthia Okereke’s account this morning’’.

As part of measures to forestall a repeat occurrence, Mr Rollas said that the Guild had ordered its members not to shoot outside of the metropolis and to ensure that they make adequate provisions for security in their locations.

AGN’s Director of Communications, Monalisa Chinda, broke the news of the kidnap of the actors in a statement made available to PREMIUM TIMES on Friday.

Ms Chinda said their kidnap had increased fear amongst members about the safety of actors filming in the country.

KNUST lecturer charged over wife’s disappearance granted GH¢300k bail

0

The Kumasi High Court has granted bail to a senior lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr. Wilberforce Aggrey who is standing trial over the disappearance of his wife, Rhodaline Amoah-Darko, a staff of the Lands Commission in Kumasi.

He has been granted bail of GH¢300,000 with one surety to be justified. Dr. Wilberforce Aggrey is yet to meet the bail conditions.

The case has been adjourned to 17th October 2022.

Rhodaline Amoah-Darko has been missing since 30th August 2021, as her husband and two others have been standing trial over the matter.

The two others include; Yaw Boateng and Justice Appiah who Rhodaline’s phone was found in their possession.

So far, three teaching assistants of the KNUST lecturer have mounted the witness box and testified.

Although Dr. Wilberforce Aggrey in his statement to the police said his wife did not return home on 30th August 2021, and that he slept in the house with his kids and the teaching assistants, the teaching assistants however contradicted his claims.

The teaching assistants told the court that they slept with their lecturer’s kids at their hostel and returned to the house the next day when Rhodaline was not around.

The court had previously denied Dr. Wilberforce Aggrey bail, but after the lawyers finished the cross-examination for the third witness, it has now granted bail to him.

Sim re-registration: MoMo vendors raise concerns over self-service app

0

The Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana is raising concerns over the introduction of a self-service sim reregistration app to augment the sim re-registration exercise.

This comes after Ursula Owusu Ekuful revealed that the deadline for the sim card re-registration exercise has been extended to September 30, 2022 in a press conference on Sunday July 31st 2022, Minister for the Minister of Communications

Ursula Owusu Ekuful also disclosed that a self-service sim reregistration app which will be launched will help Ghanaians re-register their sim cards in the comfort of their homes without going to centers of operators as is the case currently.
The app will be available for download on both android and IOS after the launch and will cost GH¢5.

Reacting to the introduction of the self-service app in an interview with host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive with sit-in host Kaakyire Nana Yaw Fianko (Mr Speaker), the General Secretary for the Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana, Evans Otumfour explained that it will be inappropriate for a sim card user who has 10 sim cards to pay GHS5 for every registration.

“If I download the app, I will be paying for it. So if I have 10 sim cards, it will not be appropriate to pay for all 10 sim cards. We all know that we have a lot of people within the informal sector who are unable to operate a cell phone on their own,” he added.

Evans Otumfour argued that a lot of people within the informal sector are unable to operate a cell phone on their own and a self-service app will be an issue.

The Mobile Money Agents Association of Ghana early on pleaded with government to extend the deadline for the SIM card re-registration exercise.

In a statement issued on Thursday, July 28, the group pleaded for the deadline to be extended to January 2023.

“As a business people in the industry, it will be very detrimental to our business and the industry, in general, should government pursue the 31st July, 2022 deadline. We appeal that with realism and having considered inconveniences and challenges, the government should extend the deadline to January 2023,” portions of the statement read.

In a statement issued on Thursday, July 28, the group pleaded for the deadline to be extended to January 2023.

“As a business people in the industry, it will be very detrimental to our business and the industry, in general, should government pursue the 31st July, 2022 deadline.

At a press conference on Sunday July 31st 2022, Minister for the Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu Ekuful revealed that the deadline for the sim card re-registration exercise has been extended to September 30, 2022.

“That will give us one full year of SIM registration. It will be reviewed at the end of this month and any SIM that has not been fully registered by the end of August will be barred from receiving certain services including voice and data services,” She added.

Reacting to the development on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, General Secretary for the Mobile Money Agents Association, Evans Otumfour, called on the general public to take advantage of the extension of and register their sim cards.

He mentioned that although the group called for a January 2023 deadline, the two-month extension is a step in the right direction.

“From the press briefing on Sunday 31st July 2022, government has extended the sim re-registration exercise for two months. Although that was not what we were looking for, we will plead with all Ghanaians to take advantage of the extension and make use of it,” he added.

Harmonious religious diversity is a force for good -Bawumia

Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has launched the 175th anniversary celebrations of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church Ghana (EPCG) with a call on Ghanaians to view and utilize the various religious inclinations as a force for good and a facilitator of national cohesion.

“As children of the only and one true God, whether Christian or Muslim, we all believe in the God of Isaac, Jacob and Abraham. We all believe in the virgin birth of Mary. We all believe that Jesus Christ is the savior and that Jesus Christ will come back again to save the world.

“This is what should bring us together as a people. We must see religion as a force for unity and not a force for division. This is a charge we must keep as children of God,” Dr Bawumia stated at the launch, which took place in Accra on Sunday, July 31, 2022.

Ghana’s unique acceptance and peaceful co-existence is the envy of many across the world and must be guarded jealously, Dr Bawumia pointed out, with the country retaining its peaceful credentials in a recent global survey.

“In addition to the economic and development issues that the church must be concerned with is the need for the church and pulpit to be used as instruments for a peaceful nation building. According to the recent Global Peace Index, Ghana maintains its position as the second most peaceful country in sub-Saharan Africa and the most peaceful in West Africa.

“This is a remarkable feat that must be guarded jealously without any compromises no matter what. Both the Bible and Quran place much emphasis on the matter of peace. And it is gratifying to note that in Ghana we have such a religious tolerant and acceptable society that makes it effortless for a Christian priest to worship with Muslims and vice versa, to the point that a Muslim Chief Imam could celebrate his 100th years anniversary with Christians in the church.”

Citing himself as an example to buttress his point of peaceful co-existence, Vice President Bawumia continued:

“We live in a society where a mother and some children could be Christians and a father and some children could be Muslims. As a young boy at Sakasaka primary school in Tamale I was born by a Methodist mother (then Susuana Mariama) and a Muslim father. Growing up I was an active member of the Methodist Boys’ Brigade until my mum changed to Islam. I suspect I am the only Muslim member of the Boys’ Brigade. Till date, out of my sibling size of seventeen (17), nine (9) are Christians and eight (8) Muslims. That is the beauty of the religious acceptance in Ghana,” he revealed.

EP Church Ghana

Dr Bawumia commended the church for its enormous contribution to national cohesion and development, saying it has been a “reliable, trusted, and formidable agent of the transformation, civilization, and progress of society. The gains we have made as a nation pre- and post-independence in moral, spiritual and socio-economic development could not have been entirely possible without the keen involvement of the church.

“Indeed, we cannot mention any monumental contributions of the church to nation-building without recognising the role of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church Ghana. In addition to your numerous educational establishments including over 500 basic and tertiary institutions such as Mawuli, Mawuko, EP Senior High Schools in Hohoe, Saboba, Tatale, plus Vocational and Technical Schools, as well as Colleges of Education, you have also earned the enviable reputation of establishing the first university in the entire Volta and Oti Regions, the Evangelical Presbyterian University College (EPUC).

“Your health centres in Wapuli, Ho, Dambai, Blajai, inter alia, coupled with your numerous relief and development projects in the areas of agricultural development, climate change advocacy, HIV/AIDS & TB Programmes, among several others, have added to your endless list of achievements over the past seventeen and half decades of your existence,” he observed.

According to the GJA President,  it was tiring combining school activities with his campaign for the GJA President seat but “I challenged myself some 8 years ago to acquire an academic improvement every year, at least a certificate. It was not easy due to the schedule in the media work, but with determination.”

“Gimpa goes through you, you don’t grow through GIMPA,” he said

He, therefore, urged Journalists to go pursue further academic  goals “regardless of the busy schedule and financial constraints to upgrade themselves”

“We must be learned in all areas. Let’s not only focus on Journalism and communication. We need knowledge in all angles and this will guide our interviews and reports perfectly”.

“It is very necessary to upgrade ourselves. Welfare tops my agenda. Capacity building is the next on my heart and a leader must lead by example and this is what I’m doing ” – he advised Journalists to prepare for the good plans loading.

“We are very happy that you (Journalists) voted for him (Dwumfour). We are grateful. This shows the direction of GIMPA. I remember him at the SRC level. Accept both, for even in failing we all learn. Question and challenge everything that doesn’t seem to be working. Bring your energy, enthusiasm, and drive to the world,” –  McDan urged.

Sim card re-registration deadline extended to Sept. 30

The deadline for the sim card re-registration exercise has been extended to September 30, 2022, following public outcry.

The deadline for the sim card re-registration should have ended yesterday, July 31, 2022, but due to the delay in the issuance of the Ghana card which is linked to the sim card registration exercise, many Ghanaians including Civil Society called for further extension while others proposed the end of 2022 as the deadline.

However, at a press conference in Accra yesterday, the Minister of Communications, Ursula Owusu Ekuful announced the good news.

She said, “Upon consultation with the industry and in view of the challenges enumerated above, I have very reluctantly decided to grant a conditional extension. The programme will be extended to 30th September to end on the anniversary of its commencement.”

“That will give us one full year of SIM registration. It will be reviewed at the end of this month and any SIM that has not been fully registered by the end of August will be barred from receiving certain services including voice and data services,” she said.

“The statistics indicate that there was a 90% drop in SIM reregistration, as soon as the first deadline was extended on 21st March. Until a week ago there were no queues, people started going to register when they realised that the deadline was imminent after going to sleep.”

Mrs. Owusu-Ekuful added, “The mobile network operators, NCA, and the NIA have all engaged additional staff, procured the necessary logistics, and are incurring significant expenses to conduct this exercise successfully, any extension of the process increases their cost.”

In a related development, the Minister for Communications disclosed that a self-service sim reregistration app will be launched tomorrow.

The app will help Ghanaians re-register their sim cards in the comfort of their homes without going to centers of operators as is the case currently.

The app will be available for download on both android and IOS after the launch.
The registration via the app will cost GH¢5 .
