‘Don’t disappoint God’- Pentecost Chair charges Christians

The Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Kwabena Nyamekye, has urged Christians of today not to disappoint God in any way.

Speaking at the 2021 Heads’ Meeting of The Church of Pentecost at the Pentecost Convention Centre, Gomoa Fetteh on Tuesday, November 9, 2021, Apostle Nyamekye said, every generation of Christians should be concerned with values  and standards that are going to rule their world or determine their culture.

Apostle Eric Nyamekye, the 6th Chairman of The Church of Pentecost, who doubles as the chancellor of the Pentecost University was delivering his message at the opening ceremony of the Heads’ meeting of The Church of Pentecost, under the theme: “Equipping the Church as an Army to Possess the Nations”, which is also the theme for the Church of Pentecost for the year 2022.

Apostle Nyamekye said, it was about time the church was unleashed into the world to bring the desired effect of the various spheres of the society.

He also revealed that, the church enters the world in two fronts: first as an army in the enemies territory which calls for putting on every available defensive mechanisms for battle, and second as an agent or ambassador of the Kingdom of God who goes into the world with the values and principles of the Kingdom of God such as the principle of work, and the dignity of labour, service, respect for all, honesty, kindness, love, faithfulness, truthfulness, forgiveness, contentment, humility, integrity in words and deeds, and moral uprightness to generate the desired transformation for our society.

In order to accomplish these important tasks, Apostle Nyamekye assured that, the church will equip its members to ensure these tasks are fulfilled. “We shall endeavour to diligently equip the members of our church to accomplish both tasks as we prepare to unleash them into the world”, he assured.

This assurance called for the theme for the year 2022; “Equiping the church as an army to possess the nations”. Possessing or taking nations, according to Apostle Nyamekye, is an ancient military phrase which means replacing the rule or reign of a nation with that of another through conquest. “This inspires the church to raise Christians who being filled with the Holy Spirit and fully equipped with the knowledge of God’s word will engage and transform their societies with godly values and principles wherever they are and in whatever they do in order to win many for Christ and transform them into salt and light of the world” he disclosed.

When giving a clue of a good Christian who is metaphored as an army, Apostle Nyamekye said, as an army, Christians need to be equipped  with the full amour of God so that they can withstand the tricks and schemes of the enemy. “Wobbly Christians who have no firm foothold in Christ are easy prey for Satan”, he cautioned passionately.

Declaring the source and the importance of the armour of God which is needed to conquer Satan and his schemes, Chairman Nyamekye said, this armour is forged and fashioned by God Himself and He invites us to put them on; it must be won night and day. “We must walk, work and sleep in them”, he said, with his facial expressions demonstrating how important it is to heed to this practice. “The army of God must not relax their vigilance or else, they are not true soldiers of Christ”, he quickly added.

The Chairman used the opportunity to appreciate the heads of the church for their unflinching support. With much joy and contentment, The Chairman of The Church of Pentecost and the Heads present gave resounding applause to about 13 ministers [Heads] who will be retiring next year, for their faithfulness and contribution to God’s church.

Students of the School of Theology, Mission And Leadership, a Bible school under Pentecost University, which got the opportunity to join the meeting expressed its joy and satisfaction about how far God has brought His church, and the future it holds. They were optimistic of a bigger and better church that will be a leading Church in the world, “looking at the mighty hand of God upon the church, and the kind of dedicated and selfless leaders God has appointed for His church”.

The Heads’ Meeting of The Church of Pentecost is an annual prayer and fasting programme that prepares the Heads of the church spiritually to strategise for the coming year while they also intercede for the church and the nations. It is also the period where the theme for the ensuing year is unveiled and discussed.

Nigeria separatist Kanu’s trial due to resume

The trial of Nigerian separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu resumes on Wednesday in Abuja.

The charges against Mr Kanu, a British citizen, include calling for secession, knowingly broadcasting falsehoods about President Muhammadu Buhari and being a member of an outlawed group.

During the last hearing in October, Mr Kanu’s lawyers said they had an application opposing the charges, most of which refer to Radio Biafra broadcasts made outside Nigeria.

The military considers Mr Kanu’s Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) a terrorist organisation.

The IPOB wants the south-east part of their country, the homeland of the Igbo ethnic group, to split from Nigeria. An attempt to secede in 1967 as the Republic of Biafra triggered a three-year civil war that killed more than one million people.

Mr Kanu was first arrested in 2015, but jumped bail in April 2017 after accusing the Nigerian army of invading his home and attempting to kill him.

His Radio Biafra broadcasts outraged the government, which said that they encouraged attacks on security forces.

He was rearrested in June after being repatriated from an undisclosed country.

His lawyers and family members alleged he was detained and mistreated in Kenya before being taken to Nigeria, though Kenya has denied involvement.

Tigray fighters gang rape women in Amhara – Amnesty

0

Tigray rebel fighters raped, robbed and assaulted women after taking control of a town in Ethiopia’s Amhara region in August, according to a report by Amnesty International.

Sixteen survivors from Nifas Mewcha town interviewed by Amnesty described being raped at gunpoint by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) fighters.

Most of the women were gang raped by attackers also looted and destroyed medical facilities.

“The testimonies we heard from survivors describe despicable acts by TPLF fighters that amount to war crimes, and potentially crimes against humanity. They defy morality or any iota of humanity,” said Agnès Callamard, the secretary general of Amnesty International.

With the destruction of the health facilities and the security situation, survivors have been unable to get comprehensive medical care since the attack.

They said they still suffered from physical and mental health problems, including back pain, bloody urine, difficulty walking, anxiety and depression.

Amnesty has asked the TPLF fighters to stop the human rights abuses “including sexual and gender-based violence”.

A spokesperson for the TPLF posted on Twitter that the latest report was an effort at “establishing impartiality

”.

Amnesty has previously documented widespread rape and sexual violence by government-allied troops and militias in Tigray.

It has asked the government to support the victims and ensure that the cases are investigated.

COP26: Okyeame Kwame charges western leaders to honour promises

Mr Kwame Nsiah-Apau, popularly known as Okyeame Kwame, a famous Ghanaian musician, has urged leaders of western nations to honour their climate financial commitment to enable Ghana and other African nations to adapt to climate change impacts.

“A few days ago some 3,000 people in the Keta Municipality of the Volta Region of Ghana were rendered homeless after a tidal wave swept their homes at dawn. We are witnessing so much flooding. Rainfall pattern has changed and it is affecting our cocoa production,” he said.

Mr Nsiah-Apau, in an interview with the Ghana News Agency on the sidelines of the on-going COP26 in Glasgow, United Kingdom, said the impact of climate change was real and was being felt thought-out the country.

“The G20 acknowledge that Africa’s contribution to emission is very little, yet the continent is the hardest hit by climate impacts. It is important the West, whose development endeavour resulted in this phenomenon, show responsibility and act accordingly,” he said.

Being a Climate Change Ambassador of a number of projects, he said he joined the Climate protest at Glasgow to urge world leaders to go beyond the rhetoric and move to action to save the world.

“I am here on behalf of the communities around Jomoro whose only river they depend on dries up quickly at the onset of the dry season due to high temperature. It is important world leaders get to know that climate change impact is making people more vulnerable,” Okyeame Kwame said.

Individuals also had a role to play to save nature by changing their eating habits, managing their garbage and ensuring efficient energy consumption, he said.

“Instead of beef, people should opt for plant protein because livestock alone contribute 18 per cent of carbon emission. We have to make it a point to unplug our phones when they are fully charged, and turn off electrical gadgets when leaving the house,” he said.
Okyeame Kwame noted that as part of the post-COP26 initiatives, some 10,000 people would be mobilized by the end of the year to support the advocacy as well as extend climate education to schools.

The global meeting COP26, which has assembled some 30,000 delegates including world leaders and innovators, is seeking to discuss and identify ways to accelerate climate action over the next week.

A milestone attained in the past week of the conference is a promise by more than 100 world leaders, including President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to tackle deforestation, which plays a critical role in absorbing vast amounts of carbon dioxide.

A total of 450 organisations controlling $130 trillion dollars – around 40 per cent of global private assets – agreed to back “clean” technology.

Stop exporting sand to Togo – EPA warns

The Executive Director of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Dr Henry Kwabena Kokofu has warned persons who illegally win sand along the coast in the Volta Region and export it to Togo to put a stop to it henceforth.

The caution comes after three Constituencies in the Region, Ketu South, Keta and Anglo were hit by tidal waves during the weekend.

It was reported that about 600 residents of Adina, a coastal community in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region were displaced over the weekend when the ravaging sea swept through their homes and destroyed properties.

This followed a similar incident at a nearby area, Amutinu on Saturday when the sea water finally ran across the Aflao-Keta road to wreak havoc in many homes.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Mr Henry Kwabena Kokofu observed that some people were winning sand along the coast and exporting it to Togo, a contributing factor to the recent disaster in the Region.

Although he said some had license to win sand along the coast, they were only allowed to use the sand to build schools, hospital, roads and others and not to export them.

He therefore urged those engaged in such activities to put a stop to it, saying those who are affected are all Ghanaians.

GHA declares war on overweight, over-height loaded trucks

0

The Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) will, from next week, begin the strict enforcement of Axle Load regulations to help stamp out recalcitrant transit truck drivers whose activities are destroying the country’s road infrastructure.

This follows the destruction of many overhead bridges as a result of truck load beyond the five-metre requirement.

The enforcement is in line with the Road Traffic Regulation, 2012 (LI 2180) and will be carried out in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service.

The acting Chief Executive Officer of the GHA, Mr Christian Nti, told the Daily Graphic that the authority had engaged the leadership of the police to firm up the right strategies to employ to curb the overweight and over-height loading of trucks, which reduced the lifespan of roads.

“Those who destroy bridges will be surcharged — the police will arrest them and they will pay for the destruction. We need to, as a nation, curb the negative impact of overweight and over-height loads carried in heavy-duty vehicles. One day, the bridges can collapse and it will become a national disaster,” he said.

Endemic situation

Mr Nti said the GHA was embarking on the enforcement drive due to the perverse manner in which drivers of heavy-duty vehicles overloaded their trucks in sharp contrast to what the law prescribed.

“It is almost as if it is normal to go beyond the 4.5-metre limit, and that is why they keep breaking the bridges, which are expensive to build,” he said.

He added that due to such activities, Ghana’s road infrastructure was increasingly under threat, forcing the government to pump into the road sector money that could be used to address other pressing national needs.

“A road that should have a life span of 25 years may only last half of the period because of some of these activities, and the government is always forced to look for more money to rehabilitate the destroyed road infrastructure,” he said.

Mr Nti explained that adherence to the axle load limit would forestall the premature failure of Ghana’s highways and, consequently, save it the huge sums of money that were applied annually to the rehabilitation of roads.

He cautioned the public to desist from encroaching on the buffer of roads which was meant for future expansion works, as the objective of the government was to expand all highways into dual carriages.

He said the public must be aware that they had no business engaging in any permanent or makeshift activity at least 30 metres from the centre of a road at both ends.

“People shouldn’t assume that the rest of the land by roads is free and, therefore, they can move onto it. When the time comes to expand to dual carriages in the future, the authority will be faced with problems with compensation, which doesn’t make the authority finish projects on time,” he said.

Stations

Mr Nti advised drivers of trucks, especially transit trucks, to desist from unacceptable activities on Ghana’s highways and strictly adhere to axle load rules.

He said they must comply with the rules that governed axle stations and ensure that they followed the requirements to avoid prosecution.

Some of the axle stations in the country are the Accra-Tema Motorway Station, the Tema-Akosombo-Afienya-Akatsi Station on the Tema Aflao road, the Boankra Station on the Accra-Kumasi corridor, the Akom Station on the Kumasi-Techiman road and the Asuoyeboa Station on the Kumasi-Sunyani road.

Others are the Asokwa Station on the Anwiankwanta-Yamoransa Junction road, the Elmina Station on the Accra-Takoradi road and the Agona-Nkwanta Station on the Takoradi -Elubo stretch.

The rest are the Bogoso Station on the Tarkwa-Ayanfuri road, the Sefwi-Bekwai Station on the Diaso-Sefwi-Bekwai road, the Mim Station on the Goaso-Akyeremasu road, the Yapei Station on the Kintampo-Tamale road, the Jema Station in the Bono Region and the Bolgatanga Station on the Tamale-Bolgatanga road.

KOSS murder: Lack of parental care cause of incident –Derek Oduro

0

Former Deputy Defence Minister, Major(rtd) Derek Oduro, has attributed the stabbing of a 15-year-old first-year student of Konongo Odumase Senior High School (KOSS) to lack of parental care and the absence of institutional values.

Five students of the Konongo Odumase Senior High School (KOSS) in the Ashanti Region, who are on trial for  murder related charges, have been remanded for roles played in the stabbing of a 15-year-old first-year student to death at Konongo Odumase Senior High School.

According to a police statement, the 5 KOSS students went on a bullying spree on the night of Friday, November 5, 2021, after prep hours leading to the attack on the deceased, Sam’un Larhan, 15.

Larhan Sam’un was stabbed with a knife by his colleague after he attempted to resolve a scuffle between the suspect and his mates.

Preliminary investigations by the Konongo Police Command shows that, the prime suspect, 17-year-old Emmanuel Frimpong was abusing some form-one KOSS students and upon resistance by some students, he stabbed the deceased.

In an interview with Atinka News’ after the incident, the District Police Commander for Konongo DSP Osei Adu Agyemang, said the these five suspects who are all in form two ganged up and decided to go and bully the form-one KOSS students and assault some of them.

He revealed that the first-year students who felt that the action was uncalled-for resisted and were able to rescue one particular student from the grips of these five suspects, an act which  infuriated the five suspects, and one of the suspects, Emmanuel Frimpong rushed on one of the first-year students in an attempt to slap him.

Commenting on the issue with host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, Former Deputy Defence Minister, Major(rtd) Derek Oduro hinted that the current breed of Senior High students lack parental care and tuition since most parents are working tirelessly leaving their wards to fend for themselves.

He noted that these current students in Senior High Schools lack “home sense”.

“Lack of parental care and the absence of institutional values is the cause of  some of these things. Most parents are working tirelessly leaving their wards to fend for themselves, they have failed to bring up their kids the right way. Some of these parents do not know the kind of friends their wards associate themselves with. These kids grow up and practice the bad deeds they learnt outside the home. Because no trained child will pick a knife to stab a fellow student,” Major(rtd) Derek Oduro told Kaakyire Ofori Ayim.

Sierra Leone tanker explosion: Mass burial in Freetown

0

The 115 people killed in Friday’s massive fuel tanker explosion in Sierra Leone are being buried in a mass ceremony in the capital, Freetown.

Many of the dead were burnt beyond recognition after fuel leaked before catching fire at a busy junction.

The authorities have also made an urgent appeal for blood donations to treat more than 100 burn victims admitted to hospitals.

Officials say that blood supplies might run out in the next 72 hours.

Those being buried on Monday will be laid to rest in the same cemetery as some of those who died in the 2017 mudslide that killed some 1,000 people in the city, says local journalist Umaru Fofana.

A health ministry spokesman has confirmed that the number of known deaths has risen to 115.

President Julius Maada Bio has declared three days of national mourning for Friday’s disaster and ordered flags to be flown at half-mast.

Mr Bio also said that a task force would be set up to look into the tragedy, and make recommendations on how to avoid similar incidents.

Most hospitals in the West African nation have been stretched thin by the accident because of the growing medical needs and also because the sector has not fully recovered from the 2014 Ebola pandemic.

The World Health Organization has despatched 6,000 tonnes of medical supplies to help treat the victims.

What happened on Friday night?

The explosion is believed to have happened at a junction outside the busy Choithram Supermarket in the densely populated Wellington suburb in the east of the city at around 22:00 GMT on Friday.

Sierra Leone’s National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA) said the vehicles collided when the tanker was entering a nearby filling station to discharge its fuel.

The drivers, noticing a leak, left their vehicles and warned people to stay away. The explosion occurred when people tried to collect the fuel, the NDMA said.

One report said a bus was completely burnt, while nearby shops and market stalls were caught up in the flames.

The port city of Freetown, which is home to just over a million people, has faced several serious disasters in recent years.

In March, more than 80 people were injured after a major fire in one of the city’s slums left more than 5,000 people displaced.

And in 2017 over 1,000 people were killed after heavy rains led to a mudslide that swept through the city, leaving around 3,000 people homeless.
