The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Keta Constituency in the Volta Region, Mr Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey has called on government to as a matter of urgency come to the aid of the people of Keta after they were hit by tidal waves over the weekend.

It was reported that about 600 residents of Adina, a coastal community in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region were displaced over the weekend when the ravaging sea swept through their homes and destroyed properties.

This followed a similar incidence at a nearby area, Amutinu on Saturday when the sea water finally ran across the Aflao-Keta road to wreak havoc in many homes.

Speaking with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie, Mr Kwame Dzudzorli Gakpey said 3000 community members were displaced, adding that about 300 do not have homes to live in because their homes were swept away by the sea.

According to the MP, some had to sleep in classrooms because their homes had been swept away by the sea.

However, he said no lives were lost although properties were destroyed.

Although this was not the first time, he said the tidal waves hit some communities which had not experienced tidal waves in 10 years because of climate change.

The MP mentioned that some of the relief items needed by the people include blankets, mattresses, bed sheets, food items, water and others.

“We are pleading with the central Government to come to our aid because we need emergency relief for the people and we are pleading that the help comes swiftly,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said they were pumping the water and channeling it back to the sea, calling on government to also help complete the phase two of the sea defense wall.
