US Holds the Cards on Ofori-Atta’s Return, Says Ayine

0

Attorney General and Minister for Justice, Dominic Ayine, has announced that the Government of Ghana has completed all legal procedures required to pursue the extradition of former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta and his alleged accomplice, Ernest Darko Akore, from the United States.

Mr. Ofori-Atta was named a suspect by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in January 2025 in several corruption-related investigations. The cases involve alleged irregularities linked to Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML), expenditure on the National Cathedral project, and transactions related to health sector payments and tax refunds.

Although the former finance minister was declared a fugitive from justice in February 2025, he has remained in the United States for nearly ten months and has not voluntarily returned to Ghana to face the investigations.

Addressing a press conference on Thursday, December 10, 2025, Attorney General Ayine disclosed that his office has formally submitted the extradition request to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for onward transmission to the United States Department of Justice and other relevant authorities.

“At this point, it is left to the American authorities, particularly the judicial authorities, to determine whether a sufficient basis exists for the two accused persons to be extradited to Ghana to stand trial,” Mr. Ayine stated.

He further revealed that the charges against Mr. Ofori-Atta and his alleged accomplices are extensive.

“There are 78 charges against Honourable Ken Ofori-Atta and his accomplices, which border on causing financial loss to the state and using public office for private benefit,” the Attorney General said.

The extradition request marks a critical step in Ghana’s efforts to pursue accountability in high-profile corruption cases involving former public officials.

Infrastructure, Food Challenges Plague Ashanti School for the Deaf

0

The Headmistress of the Ashanti School for the Deaf, Vida Aidoo, has appealed to government, corporate bodies, and philanthropists to urgently support the school with improved infrastructure, teaching and learning materials, and food supplies.

She said the school continues to face serious challenges, particularly in infrastructure development and access to innovative educational materials required to enhance teaching and learning for students with hearing impairments.

Beyond infrastructure, Madam Aidoo also highlighted the persistent shortage of food supplies, noting that while government support exists, it remains insufficient to adequately cater for the needs of the students.

“Government is trying its best in terms of food provision and infrastructure support, but it is never enough for a school of this nature,” she stated.

She made the appeal during an interview with Sofoba Kwame Afrifah on the sidelines of a dental screening and Christmas feast organised for the students by Perfect Smile Foundation, in collaboration with Nesher Prophetic Ministry.

The Headmistress expressed her deep appreciation to the organisers for the timely intervention, describing the dental screening exercise as both thoughtful and beneficial to the overall well-being of the students.

On her part, the Chief Executive Officer of Perfect Smile Foundation, Mrs. Augustina Mensah Ephraim-Appiah, explained that the initiative was motivated by the need to promote oral health among children with special needs, who often have limited access to dental care.

She further pledged that the foundation remains committed to extending similar outreach programmes to other institutions and organisations in need, resources permitting.

Muntaka Calls for Strong Police–Community Collaboration at Upper West Police HQ Commissioning

0

The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, has commissioned the newly completed Upper West Regional Police Headquarters in Wa, calling for stronger collaboration between the police and the public to sustain peace and security in the region.

The commissioning marks the fulfillment of a decades-long vision to provide the Upper West Region with a befitting regional police headquarters. Since the region’s creation in 1983, the Regional Police Command had operated from facilities originally built to serve as the Wa Police Station and district headquarters under the former Upper Region.

A major milestone in the project’s journey occurred on November 25, 2014, when the then Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Mohammed Alhassan, performed the groundbreaking ceremony. The vision was sustained through successive police administrations and was eventually completed in 2025 through the combined efforts of the immediate past IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and the current IGP, Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

Upper West Region: Muntaka Commissions Regional Police Headquarters, Calls for Strong Police–Community Collaboration

Hon. Muntaka paid special tribute to the Overlord of the Waala Traditional Area, Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV, whose intervention was instrumental in securing land for the project, noting that without his timely support, the facility would not have been possible.

In his address, the Interior Minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to strengthening the Ghana Police Service through continuous investment in infrastructure, logistics, mobility, and communication equipment. However, he stressed that accountability and proper management of these resources are critical.

“Every office must be maintained. Every vehicle must be handled with care. Every piece of equipment must be protected and used efficiently,” he cautioned.

Describing security as a top national priority, Hon. Muntaka noted that effective policing depends not only on resources but also on diligence, discipline, and accountability within the service.

He also highlighted the sacrifices made by police officers, describing them as the “thin line between calm and chaos,” and urged the public to regard officers as partners rather than adversaries.

The Minister called on residents of the Upper West Region to support, respect, and cooperate with the police by sharing timely information, stressing that a police service embraced by the people becomes more effective and responsive.

The new headquarters brings together administrative offices, investigative units, and specialized operational teams under a single command structure. According to Hon. Muntaka, this will enhance rapid response, improve crime management, strengthen inter-agency coordination, and bring policing closer to communities.

He emphasized, however, that the police cannot fight crime alone. “Security is a shared responsibility. If you see something, say something,” he urged.

On his part, the Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, highlighted significant improvements in crime control across the region. He disclosed that intelligence-led operations and community policing initiatives have contributed to a 46.7 percent reduction in highway robberies in 2025 compared to 2024.

He also cited the successful resolution of the serial killings that previously heightened fear in the region, noting that suspects have been arrested and are currently facing trial.

“These achievements reaffirm that crime has no refuge in the Upper West Region,” DCOP Yiribaare stated, commending officers for their professionalism, resilience, and dedication.

The ultra-modern facility was constructed by Donbarak GH Ltd, which was praised for delivering a functional and impressive structure tailored to the operational needs of the Ghana Police Service.

The commissioning of the headquarters is expected to further strengthen peace, security, and public confidence in policing, while contributing to the socio-economic development of the Upper West Region.

Underperformance Will Not Be Tolerated – Energy Minister Warns CEOs at 2025 Sector Review Retreat

0

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, Hon. John Jinapor, has issued a firm warning to Chief Executive Officers and heads of agencies within the energy sector, stating that underperformance will not be tolerated under the administration of President John Dramani Mahama.

Speaking at the opening of the 2025 Energy Sector Performance Review Retreat in Takoradi, the Minister stressed that public office is a privilege rather than an entitlement. He reminded participants that all appointments are made at the discretion of the President and are tied to clear expectations of performance and accountability.

The retreat has brought together the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition and its allied agencies to review sector performance, chart a reform agenda, and align strategies toward sustainable energy delivery and national development.

Hon. Jinapor noted that reshuffles are a normal feature of governance and could affect ministers and chief executives alike, emphasizing that decisions on who remains in office rest solely with the President.

The Energy Minister acknowledged recent improvements in the sector, observing that the industry has begun receiving positive public recognition. However, he urged stakeholders to sustain the momentum, warning that job security for sector leaders depends on consistent delivery and results.

Looking ahead, Hon. Jinapor announced that 2025 will be a defining year for the energy sector, with accelerated reforms planned across the entire energy value chain—from power generation to transmission and distribution.

He cautioned sector leaders against allowing personal interests or emotions to hinder national progress, urging them to consider the long-term impact of their decisions on Ghana’s development.

Kwesi Botchway Jnr Requests Update From A-G on EOCO Galamsey Investigations

0

A private legal practitioner, Kwesi Botchway Jnr, Esq., has formally petitioned the Attorney-General and Minister for Justice for an update on investigations into alleged illegal mining activities commonly referred to as galamsey, which were earlier referred to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

In a letter dated Wednesday, December 17, 2025, and addressed to the Attorney-General, Mr. Botchway said he was “respectfully” seeking clarification on the status of the investigations, citing strong public interest and the severe national impact of illegal mining.

The request follows a directive issued by the Attorney-General on July 15, 2025, which instructed EOCO to commence investigations into suspected illegal mining activities in several mining districts across the country. According to the lawyer, the directive specifically ordered EOCO to “invite the following persons named in recent credible reports for interrogation namely; Mr. Yakubu Abanga and Mr. Joseph Yamin,” in addition to matters arising from the Prof. Kwabena Frimpong-Boateng Report.

Referring to EOCO’s statutory mandate, Mr. Botchway noted that the directive was issued pursuant to the Economic and Organised Crime Office Act, 2010 (Act 804) and formed part of the government’s broader commitment to tackling illegal mining.

In his letter, the legal practitioner requested clarification on three key matters: “The current progress of the investigations; any interim findings EOCO has submitted to your Office; and expected timelines for the completion of the investigations.”

Mr. Botchway further grounded his request in the Attorney-General’s own public justification for the investigations, quoting directly from the July directive that the action was “borne out of growing public concern, corroborated by media reports and intelligence, regarding the involvement of some citizens in unauthorized mining operations (generally called galamsey) that are in blatant contravention of the provisions of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703), as amended by Act 995.”

He emphasized that illegal mining activities “not only flout our mining regulations but also gravely endanger our water bodies, forest reserves, and local livelihoods,” underscoring the environmental and socio-economic consequences of galamsey.

According to the petitioner, the request for updates is being made “in good faith and in the interest of transparency, public accountability, and strengthening public confidence in the national fight against illegal mining.”

Mr. Botchway further appealed for an official response “at your earliest convenience,” and thanked the Attorney-General for his “continued service to the Republic.”

Fancy Gadam Slams GHAMRO Over GH¢123.82 Royalty Payment

Tamale-based musician Mujahid Ahmed Bello, popularly known as Fancy Gadam, has publicly criticised the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) after receiving a royalty payment of just GH¢123.82—an amount he says does not reflect his years of active contribution to Ghana’s music industry.

Reacting to the payment, the award-winning artiste questioned the methodology GHAMRO uses in calculating and distributing royalties. He described the amount as “deplorably inadequate,” especially considering the widespread popularity and consistent airplay of his music across the country.

Fancy Gadam’s comments have reignited long-standing concerns among Ghanaian musicians over transparency, fairness, and accountability in the country’s royalty distribution system.

Several artistes have previously complained that despite enjoying significant radio play, streaming numbers, and public performances, the financial returns they receive remain disproportionately low.

The renewed debate adds pressure on GHAMRO to clarify its royalty calculation processes and engage more openly with rights holders, as calls for reforms within the music royalty system continue to grow.
