Don’t increase road tolls- GTRCC to Gov’t

0

The General Secretary of Ghana Road Transport Co-ordinating Council (GTRCC), Mr Ohene Yeboah has appealed to government not to increase the road toll as proposed earlier.

The Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah proposed an upward review of Ghana’s road toll rate to finance major roads in the country.

Mr Amoako Atta made the statement when he was being vetted last Tuesday by the Appointments Committee of Parliament.

This was in response to a question posed by Member of Parliament for Asawase, Muntaka Mubarak on how to innovatively address the issue of funding of major roads in Ghana.

He stated, “At the moment, Ghana pays the lowest rate in the whole world…If you want to go the B.O.T. (Build Operate Transfer) or BOOT (Build Own Operate Transfer) way as we see in other parts of the world, the research that has been done by my ministry on the average toll rate is around $1. But here people pay 50p for toll rate.”

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Mr Ohene Yeboah said if the toll rate is increased, it will affect transport fares and the entire transport business.

“We should not increase it because the taxes on vehicle parts are more. When it is increased, we will be forced to increase transport fares and the hardship in the country will increase. If there are other measures, they can put in place, they should do it instead of increasing the toll rate,” he said.

Mr Ohene Yeboah identified that most people who do not go to areas beyond toll booth, saying the payment of the toll is discriminatory.

According to him, as at 2020, about 2.8 million cars had been registered but the toll generated only about GHS70,000,000 for last year.

The figure, he said way smaller than expected considering the number of cars that have been registered in the country.

Meanwhile, Mr Ohene Yeboah said everyone who uses vehicles must pay road toll so that enough money can be generated to develop the roads.

He also urged the government to ensure that monies generated from road tolls are used to develop the roads.

In other news: China flood: Terror as train carriage submerge

As floodwater crashed through a busy subway station in China on Tuesday, desperate passengers tried to flee while others were swept helplessly off platforms.

In one train carriage, water seeped in and rose from ankle, to waist, to neck-height. Panicked commuters stretched upwards to breathe, while others lifted shorter people into the shrinking air pocket above.

In terrifying videos shared on social media, some passengers can be seen standing on chairs and clinging to the ceiling as the floodwater creeps upwards. One tried to smash a window, before realising that there was even more water outside the carriage.

Some filmed the unfolding tragedy, while others called loved ones or posted pleas for help. “I can’t speak any more,” one woman wrote on the social media site Weibo. “If no rescue comes in 20 minutes, hundreds of us will lose our lives.”

“We were all standing on the seats, and the water was already on our knees,” a woman who gave her name as Ms Li told Elephant News.

“Some shorter passengers had water up to their necks,” she said, adding that as time went on the air supply began to diminish.

After about an hour, the train carriage was plunged into darkness and the oxygen level waned further. “I was really scared, but the most terrifying thing was not the water, but the diminishing air supply,” one person told Reuters news agency.

After several hours of fear and uncertainty, rescuers were able to gain access through the roof of the carriage and pulled people out. “We knocked on the glass a bit [on the ceiling]. Then suddenly there was air,” an unnamed woman told state broadcaster CCTV.

Gender Minister vows to solve plight of School Feeding caterers

The Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection, Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo has promised to solve all issues relating to School Feeding for smooth running of the programme at a meeting with the leadership of the Ghana National School Feeding Caterers Association at the Ministry, Accra.

The leadership of the Ghana National School Feeding Caterers Association called on Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo at the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, to present a petition on some purported unfair treatment being meted out to them.

The National President of the Association, Hajia Asana Salifu presenting the petition on behalf of its members, mentioned the delay in payment, inadequate Feeding cost per child(currently at 0.97p per child), operational structure and corruption at the School Feeding Secretariat as issues members of her Association are unhappy with.

In the Petition, members suggested to the Minister that the Ministry negotiate with the Agricultural Development Bank(ADB) to arrange pre-financing  arrangements for caterers so they can deduct when government releases funds for their payment.

Hon Sarah Adwoa Safo in welcoming them, commended them for their patience and sacrifice in partnering government in providing nutritious meals to children in public basic schools across the country and assured them of the Ministry’s commitment to ensure the smooth running of the School Feeding Programme as it one of government’s flagship programmes designed to reduce poverty and tackle food insecurity issues in the country.

“Since I came into office, the School Feeding Programme has been at the heart of my agenda. I can assure you that we are working assiduously to ensure that caterers are paid on time and that we resolve all issues which affect the smooth running of the programme.” she stated.

She continued, “The Ghana School Feeding Programme is one of government’s flagship programmes designed to reduce poverty and tackle food insecurity issues especually in the poorest areas of the country with a focus on providing one hot nutritious meal to children in public kindergartens and primary schools and as such, the Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo goverment is committed to improving the programme and make it worthwhile for our loyal caterers” she stressed.

She also called for calm among caterers and asked the Association to work hand in hand with the Ministry as they try to improve the programme and its service delivery to pupils in our basic schools across the country.

“I will urge you to stay calm and continue to cook the nutritious meals you have been providing for our school children. The programme has increased the enrollment of pupils in our public schools so I’m pleading with you, for us to work together to get the School Feeding Programme to the desirable state it ought to be.” she concluded.

Over 3,000,000 pupils in about 10,000 schools in all  Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) are benefiting from the School Feeding Programme which has significantly reduced the incidence of malnutrition, which is the cause of high vulnerability of children to disease and intellectual malfunction.

Bawumia urges Ghanaian youth to step up and be counted

The Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged Ghanaian youth, particularly the large number of graduates, to take advantage of Government’s various initiatives and interventions, particularly in the area of digitalization, to make a positive difference in their lives and the nation as a whole.

Reminding the youth that they are the future of Ghana, Dr Bawumia urged them to fully utilise their innate and learned abilities to “step up, do something great, and be counted.”

Vice President Bawumia made the call at the 13th Congregation of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA) on Saturday 24th July, 2021 during which 870 graduands, drawn from the UPSA School of Law and School of Graduate Studies, were awarded various degrees after years of study.

The University also conferred an Honorary Doctorate Degree on the Minister for Energy and MP for Manhyia South, Hon Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, for his meritorious service while serving as Minister for Education, during which he implemented a number of epoch-making policies and programmes, including the Free Senior High School (FSHS).

“A good society requires men and women ready to use their intellect and knowledge to addressing society’s problems and finding solutions to the benefit of the many. A good society requires a generation of citizens who are always looking for opportunities to lift up the weak in society, opening doors wider for the less privileged in society.

“And it also requires respect for our fellow citizens and a desire to brighten the corner where ever you are. Mother Ghana needs you – your intellect, your knowledge, your discipline and your dedication to work” he urged the graduates.

Commending the authorities of UPSA for leveraging technology in adapting to the ‘new normal’, including plans to migrate to a smart and paperless electronic platform for its day-to-day administration in the wake of Covid 19, Dr Bawumia said the pandemic has presented many challenges across several sectors of our economy, including the educational sector, and it is important that all stakeholders support Government’s digitization drive.

“Access to internet connectivity ensured that academic work, commercial transactions, social interactions and other academic and administrative activities were uninterrupted.

“Government initiated a free-wifi project to provide Wi-Fi connectivity to 722 public Senior High Schools, 46 Colleges of Education, 16 regional offices and 260 District Education Offices. So far, 13 public universities have joined.

“The benefits of a Free Wi-Fi Project for promoting education is enormous; not least, it will ensure continued learning. More importantly, lecturers, teachers and students will have access to the necessary educational information to enhance teaching, learning and research in our Universities and Colleges across the country.

“Education is the heartbeat of his Excellency President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. He is passionate about producing citizens who are productive, problem solvers, innovators and have the nation at heart.

“Digitization is a catalyst for reaching every youth with quality education and we are determined not to leave anybody behind.”

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh

Vice President Bawumia commended the authorities UPSA for recognizing the many accomplishments of Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh aka Napo, “the hard-working, former Minister of Education, who executed Government’s bold flagship programme: Free SHS with distinction.

“In recognition of his many accomplishments, Hon. Prempeh was recently invited by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) to serve on its Mission 4.7 High-Level Advisory Group as an Honorary and Meritorious Member.

“I am very happy that he has also been recognised and honoured at home by UPSA. A well-deserved honour, and it reinforces the high regard many have of him for his remarkable leadership role in the promotion of quality education in Ghana.”

UPSA

Established in 1965 as a private institution, UPSA was taken over by the Government of Ghana in 1979. The Institute attained fully fledged university status on 1st September, 2008, when it was granted a Presidential Charter. On 9th October, 2012, the Institute was renamed the University of Professional Studies, Accra following the Presidential assent to the University of Professional Studies Bill passed by Parliament on 31st July of the same year to bring into effect the University of Professional Studies Act, 2012 (Act 850).
