SEND Ghana mounts pressure on Ken Agyapong

SEND Ghana is mounting pressure on government to investigate Kennedy Agyapong’s alleged verbal abuse on Multimedia Journalist.

According to SEND Ghana, it has followed media reports with a keen interest in the alleged inflammatory comment by the Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong, against a Kumasi-based journalist working for the Multimedia Group.

The MP, who is also the Chair of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Defense and Interior, is alleged to have incited the public against the journalist Erastus Asare Donkor, in a live television program and called for the latter to be beaten mercilessly.

“This boy should be beaten seriously. He is so annoying. We should beat the hell out of him,” the MP reportedly said.

“SEND Ghana is of the view that such abusive comments attributed to the honorable MP not only constitute threats to the life of the journalist but also, have the potency of undermining Ghana’s democratic credentials and an affront to press freedom,” it stated.

Meanwhile, SEND Ghana was pleased to learn that the Multimedia Group has since filed a formal complaint and petitioned relevant authorities to investigate the issue while asking for state security and protection for the journalist.

“We extend our support to the media group and join hands with well-meaning Ghanaians, International Organizations, and Civil Society in demanding a prompt resolution to this grave matter from institutions of the state. We urge the security agencies and Parliament, in particular, to expedite investigations into the alleged conduct of the MP and exact the appropriate sanctions,” it stated.

Send Ghana further called on the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to honour his pledge to “defend the right of the media to free expression and promote accountable governance”, by creating a safe environment for journalists to practice without fear of intimidation.

It added that,” If our democracy must advance, freedom and independence of the media must be guaranteed as enshrined in the 1992 fourth republican constitution.”

SEND Ghana continued that, “It is noteworthy that Ghana ranked low on the 2021 World Press Freedom Index compared to previous years while maintaining its 30th position in 2020. A report by the Reporters Without Borders attributed the country’s low ranking to the failure of the state to deal with the growing threats on the lives of journalists.”

“We wish to caution that Ghana risk rolling back further if we allow needless and unwarranted attacks on journalists especially, by public officials with impunity in the exercise of their profession,” SEND Ghana added.

All 27 mobiles phones had price tags, while other items including two hoody pullovers were retrieved from the suspects.

During police interrogation, suspect Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak told the police that he obtained the mobile phones from a man he does not know at Alavanyo Wudidi in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta region. He, however, failed to provide any receipts for the transaction.

Meanwhile, suspects Nervis Otu Laryea and Ebenezer Osei claimed to have offered a lift to suspect Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak on their way from Alavanyo, where suspect Ebenezer Osei claimed to had gone to visit a shrine for spiritual assistance in his business.

Further investigation by the police revealed that the Toyota Corolla with registration number AC 1621-18 was also acquired by suspect Nervis Otu Laryea at Afienya from someone from Togo but without documents.

But after media publication of the arrest, a team of police officers and a shop owner (name withheld) from Mamfe Akwapem in the Eastern region, followed up to Ho and identified the mobile phones as stolen items in an operation that took place two days earlier before the arrest of the three in the Volta region.

The owner of the shop who came here in the company of the police has provided serial numbers that correspond with all 27 phones retrieved from the accused. The three foreign pistols retrieved from them were also used by David, Mubarak, and Laryea on the night of the burglary.”

Sgt. Dogbatse, however, stated that the police are yet to establish the involvement of the third suspect, Ebenezer Osei in the crime as investigations continue ahead of their next appearance in court scheduled for Tuesday, 17th August 2021.

Appointments Committee unanimously recommends Kissi Agyebeng as Special Prosecutor

0

The Appointments Committee of Parliament Thursday unanimously recommended the Special Prosecutor (SP) Nominee, Kissi Agyebeng, vetted earlier in the day, to be approved by the House to take up the position.

“The Appointments Committee unanimously agreed to recommend him to the House for approval,” Joe Osei-Owusu, Chairman of the Committee, said, adding that the members were satisfied with his answers.

Mr Osei-Owusu, interacting with journalists in Parliament, after an indoor sitting of the Appointments Committee following the vetting, said: “As to how other people view his answers, I’d rather leave it to them and stay within the rules to make recommendations to the House.”

The report on the vetting, and the recommendation, would be presented to the plenary for debate to say ‘aye’ or ‘no’ to the recommendation.
Mr Agyebeng had, at the vetting, described the Office of the Special Prosecutor as unique, as compared to all the other law enforcement agencies in respect of its mandate.

That, he said, was: “because no other institution has been carefully designed and thought-out to fight corruption specifically as Act 959 has done.

“…In respect of this, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) is the gold standard under the UN Convention against corruption and the AU Convention on the prevention and combating of corruption.”

“The international community, including Ghana, ratified these conventions in the early 2,000s, I think 2002 if I’m not wrong, that every jurisdiction requires such a specialised agency, it should be made independent with a specialised trained staff to focus on the fight against corruption.”

The SP nominee said the OSP was relevant because of its independence from the Office the Attorney General.

“The Attorney General is a member of Cabinet; he’s part of the government. How independent would he be in terms of certain individuals if they were to fall foul of the law if, for instance, they are also members of cabinet or members of the government?” he asked.

“But in respect of the OSP, the person manning it, who is not part of the government machinery, is independent; and Hon Chair, if given the nod, I’m going to guard my independence jealously.”

Mr Agyebeng was nominated by the Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Godfred Dame, as Ghana’s second Special Prosecutor following the resignation of Mr Martin Amidu from the position in November 2020, alleging political interference by President Akufo-Addo in his job.

Mr Agyebeng has been a law lecturer at the Faculty of Law of the University of Ghana, Legon, since October 2006, teaching and researching Criminal Law, International Humanitarian Law, International Law, Corporate Law, and Legal Research and Writing.

Called to the Bar in October 2003 and also engaged in private law practice, Mr Kissi Agyebeng holds a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree from the University of Ghana and Master of Laws (LLM) Degree from the Dalhousie University, Canada, and Cornell Law School.

As part of a 2016 campaign promise, the Office of the Special Prosecutor was set up in 2018 by the New Patriotic Party-led Government.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo then nominated Mr Martin Amidu, an anti-corruption campaigner and a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress, as the first Special Prosecutor, and he was given the nod after Parliament had vetted him.

The OSP was established with the mandate to investigate and prosecute all suspected corruption and corruption-related offences pertaining to public officers, politically exposed persons, and persons in the private sector alleged to have been involved in any corruption and corruption-related offences.

Apart from initiating investigations on its own, Act 959 gives the Office of the Special Prosecutor the power to receive and investigate complaints of alleged corruption from the public or investigate suspected corruption or corruption-related offenses upon referral from bodies such as the Attorney General’s Department, the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice, and the Economic and Organised Crime Office.

MAN UTD confirm £73M Sancho deal

0

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of Jadon Sancho according to The Independent.

The Premier League club reached an agreement to sign the England winger from Borussia Dortmund last month, and the 21-year-old successfully underwent a medical following his participation at Euro 2020. He has signed a five-year deal at Old Trafford.

United are understood to have paid €85m (£72.9m) for the England international, making him the fourth most expensive signing in their history.

“I’ll always be grateful to Dortmund for giving me the opportunity to play first team football, although I always knew that I would return to England one day,” Sancho said.

“The chance to join Manchester United is a dream come true and I just cannot wait to perform in the Premier League. This is a young and exciting squad and I know, together, we can develop into something special to bring the success that the fans deserve. I am looking forward to working with the Manager and his coaching team to further develop my game.”

Sancho scored 50 goals in 137 appearances for Dortmund during his four seasons at the club, establishing himself as one of the most exciting talents in European football following his transfer from Manchester City in 2017.

He made three appearances for England at Euro 2020, including a late substitute appearance in the final defeat to Italy in which he missed a penalty in the shootout.

Sancho was one of three England players, along with new Manchester United team-mate Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka, to receive racist abuse following the final.

The signing represents a key step for United under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who said the club must “strengthen” this summer in order to catch up with Premier League champions and rivals Manchester City.

“Jadon epitomises the type of player I want to bring to the club, he is a forward player in the best traditions of Manchester United. He will form an integral part of my squad for years to come and we look forward to seeing him blossom. His goals and assists records speak for themselves and he will also bring tremendous pace, flair and creativity to the team,” Solskjaer said.

“Old Trafford will give him the platform he needs to release his untapped talent and perform at the highest level. For a player of his age, Jadon has already achieved a great deal and showed the courage to go and prove himself abroad. We all look forward to welcoming Jadon to the squad as we prepare for the new campaign.”

Sancho, who United tried to sign last year, will join up with the squad following his summer break due to his involvement in the Euros.

Ugandan weightlifter deported from Japan after going missing

A Ugandan weightlifter who went missing from a pre-Olympics camp in western Japan has been flown home a few hours before the official start of the Games.

Julius Ssekitoleko is currently being held at Uganda police headquarters to determine whether or not he had committed a crime, CID Spokesperson Charles Twino said.

He left the camp a week ago and was later found by the authorities buying a railway ticket.

Ssekitoleko’s mother, pregnant wife and government officials who had travelled to Uganda’s Entebbe airport to meet him on Friday morning did not get an opportunity to greet him on arrival.

In a statement, the ministry of foreign affairs said the athlete was being “rehabilitated”.

It said the government would “help him understand how such acts of misconduct cannot only affect him as an athlete but also other athletes in the sports sector and the nation at large”.

When he disappeared, Ssekitoleko had left a note saying he wanted to stay in Japan and work.

10 cancer causing foods you should avoid

Do you know that your diet can cause and sometimes prevent cancer? That’s right, some foods CAN increase the risk of cancer because of the compounds. While some pose a small risk, other foods contain potentially dangerous, carcinogenic compounds. Take a look at 10 foods you eat every day that can cause cancer.

1. Canned Tomatoes

Canned foods are never good for you. This is because the lining of almost all canned foods are made with a chemical called bisphenol-A, or BPA. Tomatoes are exceptionally dangerous due to their high acidity, which seems to cause BPA to bleed from the lining of the can into the tomatoes themselves.

2. Alcohol

Alcohol is the second leading cause of cancer. While a moderate or low consumption of alcohol can be healthy and lead to a reduced risk of heart disease, excessive drinking is known to cause heart failure, stroke, and sudden death. Moreover, it damages the liver and kidneys.

3. Diet anything

Diet foods such as soda and even packaged, ‘healthy’ dinners contain aspartame. This makes these foods even worse than their regular counterparts. There are numerous studies showing that aspartame causes many diseases and sicknesses such as cancers, birth defects, and heart problems.

4. Refined sugars

Cancer seems to love sweet things. The Nobel laureate in medicine, German Otto Warburg, back in 1931, first discovered that tumors and cancers both use sugars to “feed” themselves and/or to increase in size. If you already have a risk for cancer, it is a good idea to stay away from desserts and sweetened foods.

5. Highly Processed White Flours

Mills are no longer content with waiting for their flour to whiten with time; mills now bleach flour with chlorine gas. The EPA states that chlorine gas is a dangerous irritant that is not safe to inhale and in large quantities can be lethal.

6. Artificial sweeteners

There is an overwhelming number of scientific evidence that points to these sweeteners causing cancer. Aspartame is broken down in the body into a deadly toxin called DKP. When your stomach processes this chemical, it in turn, produces chemicals that can cause cancer, especially brain tumors.

7. Farmed salmon

Although fresh salmon is a great item for a healthy diet, the same cannot be said for the farmed alternative. The fish are fed unnatural diets and are contaminated with chemicals, antibiotics, pesticides, and other known carcinogens. Also, farmed salmon are fed chemicals to make their meat that reddish pink color that should occur naturally but doesn’t because of the diet of chicken litter that they are fed.

8. Potato chips

Potato chips aren’t just culprits that lead to weight gain. Recent studies have also linked this tempting snack to cancer. Besides being full of trans-fats which can cause high cholesterol in most people, they have excessive sodium levels which, for many people, cause high blood pressure. They also contain plenty of additives, all which are bed for your health.

9. GMO fruits

GMO fruits or non-organic fruits contain dangerous chemicals. These include herbicides and pesticides such as atrazine, thiodicarb, and organophosphates as well as high levels of plant fertilisers. These substances can cause severe damage to our organs, particularly those in the reproductive system.

10. Preserved food

These include anything that is salted, pickled or smoked. Meats such as bacon, sausage, bologna, and salami are high in fat and salt. All these processed meats contain several chemicals and preservatives, including sodium nitrates, which make them, look appealing and fresh but are well-known carcinogens. Smoked meats seem to be particularly bad as the meat picks up tar from the smoking process. Pickled foods are very high in salts. They increase the risk of getting colorectal cancer and stomach cancer.
