SA: 72 Die through looting and unrest

0

The death toll in South Africa has risen to 72 as violence continues across the country following the jailing of former President Jacob Zuma.

Crowds looting and setting alight shopping centres clashed with police in several cities on Tuesday.

The BBC filmed a baby being thrown from a building in Durban that was on fire after ground-floor shops were looted.

A day earlier, 10 people were killed in a stampede during looting at a shopping centre in Soweto.

The military have been deployed to help police overstretched since the unrest began last week.

South African police said in a statement they had identified 12 people suspected of provoking the riots, and that a total of 1,234 people had been arrested.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called it some of the worst violence witnessed in South Africa since the 1990s, before the end of apartheid, with fires started, highways blocked and businesses and warehouses looted in major cities and small towns in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng provinces.

Ministers have warned that if looting continues, there is a risk areas could run out of basic food supplies soon – but have ruled out declaring a state of emergency.

What happened to the baby?

The child was caught by a crowd of people who rushed to help those trapped in the apartment block in the central business district of Durban, a coastal city in KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday afternoon.

Those stealing from shops on the ground floor of Smith Street had started the fire which spread, affecting those living upstairs.

The BBC’s Nomsa Maseko in Durban says that after catching the baby, the passers-by and neighbours rushed to get ladders to help other residents, including children, escape.

The mother was reunited with her baby, but was too emotional to talk. The rescue services arrived after about 20 minutes to help douse the fires.

How bad is the damage?

More than 200 shopping malls had been looted by Monday afternoon, Bloomberg news agency quoted the chief executive officer of Business Leadership South Africa, Busisiwe Mavuso, as saying.

Several shopping centres in Soweto – South Africa’s largest township which was once home to Nelson Mandela – have been completely ransacked, with ATMs broken into, restaurants, stores selling alcohol and clothing shops all left in tatters.

Soldiers working with the police managed to catch a few rioters; in total almost 800 have been arrested, but law enforcement remains heavily outnumbered, he reports.

In KwaZulu-Natal – where livestock has also been stolen – the unrest continues with ambulances coming under attack by rioters in some areas, South Africa’s TimesLive news site reports.

Video footage shows that a blood bank was looted in Durban as Mr Ramaphosa addressed the nation on Monday night.

Analysis: What’s behind the riots?

By Farouk Chothia, BBC News

The catalyst was the arrest last week of Zuma, with his supporters blockading major roads – the economic arteries of the nation – as they demanded the release of their political hero.

Low income levels and unemployment – standing at a record high of 32.6% among the workforce and even higher at 46.3% among young people – are seen as the ticking bombs that have exploded.

Many South Africans have been shaken by the riots that have swept through Zuma’s political heartland of KwaZulu-Natal and the economic hub of Gauteng.

And many feel that his successor as president, Cyril Ramaphosa, has failed to provide decisive leadership – either to calm anger over Zuma’s imprisonment or to reassure South Africans that they will be safe.

Mr Ramaphosa was accused of belatedly deploying troops – and only 2,500 of them compared with the 70,000 he deployed to enforce a nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19 last year.

But there is no agreement over the deployment – the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) opposition party has opposed it, saying the solution lies in “political intervention and engagement with our people”.

Many residents in affected areas have remained at home, and some have formed what local media call “defence squads” to protect their neighbourhoods and businesses as looting and burning continues.

There is no doubt that the unrest is the biggest security challenge that Mr Ramaphosa has faced since he became president in 2018 after ousting Zuma. It is bound to worsen the economic crisis, already hit by the pandemic, given the scale of destruction.

Why is Zuma in jail?

He was convicted of contempt of court last month after failing to attend an inquiry into corruption during his presidency.

The 79-year-old, who denies corruption, was given a 15-month prison sentence. He handed himself in to police last Wednesday.

He is hoping to get the sentence rescinded or reduced by the country’s constitutional court. However, legal experts say his chances of success are slim.

Police Minister Bheki Cele has warned that “no amount of unhappiness or personal circumstances from our people gives the right to anyone to loot, vandalise and do as they please and break the law”.

There has been some concern over fake news online fuelling the unrest, while the governing African National Congress (ANC) had already revealed it was looking into tweets sent by Zuma’s daughter, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla.

State Security Minister Ayanda Dlodlo said officials were “busy sorting fact from fiction” after receiving information that former security agents linked to Zuma had instigated the violence.

“These technological introductions have reduced the cost of doing business and have rather increased productivity.

“For these and many more, the Initiators of Change Foundation would want to honour you as ‘Africa’s Digital Revolutionary Leader of the Decade’ in recognition and appreciation of the positive impact you have made on society and the development of Ghana.”

Presenting the Award to Dr Bawumia at the Jubilee House, Accra, on Tuesday, 13 July 2021 the Foundation, represented by its Executive Director, Kofi Gyan, and several members of the Board of Trustees including Most Rev Dr Aboagye-Mensah, former Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church, praised the Vice President for “the good work he is doing” to help accelerate Ghana’s development.

The Award, a pencil art drawing of the Vice President, is to symbolise the enduring legacy of Dr Bawumia’s works and is “in recognition and appreciation of the positive impact you have made on society and the development of Ghana,” they added.

Noting that the Foundation had in the past recognised and awarded several distinguished persons, including all past Presidents, some politicians and civil servants, Mr Gyan explained that a decision was taken to recognise and award distinguished public servants to mark a special occasion of the Foundation’s life.

“This year, 2021, the Foundation is 10 years, and as part of our 10th anniversary, the Board decided that we should focus on public servants, because public servants are also doing a lot in terms of the development of the country. Dwumfour calls for deepened relations between media and corporate Ghana

An aspiring Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) President, Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, has called for a deepened relationship between Corporate Ghana and the media in order to promote their businesses hand- in- hand.

He made the call when he took his campaign to the Ashfoam Factory Limited in Accra on Tuesday, July 13 2021.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr Dwumfour noted that Ashfoam has been one of the companies that have supported the media and the GJA over the years.

He stated that the company has supported GJA Awards by honouring the Best Journalist of the year, Female Journalist of the Year and the Most Promising Journalist of the year with products aside the monetary support it gives to GJA.

He also noted that Ashfoam has also helped with the painting of some parts of the building of the Press Centre amongst others hence the need to engage the company while aspiring to take over as the next President.

“We see them as a major corporate partner and as all know, the media thrives on an enabling environment to succeed and so if the media throws our support behind corporate Ghana, they will also support us when we go to them for support,” he said.

Mr Dwumfour said his campaign team will visit corporate Ghana, aside Ashfoam to appreciate them and to also let them know how the media can get the government to create an enabling environment for businesses in the country.

He also underscored the need to deepen the relationship between corporate Ghana, including Ashfoam, in order to help address some of their challenges.

“Businesses thrive on enabling environment and it is the media that will create it. What we can do as a Fourth Estate of the Realm is not just to expose the ills and the wrongs but to also help so that government will make laws that will protect our indigenous businesses, protect entrepreneurs and local businesses because even if investors come here, they employ the people here to do the job. So, we are here to strengthen the partnership between us and assure them that we will continue to deepen the working relationship they already started with the GJA, “he said.

He called on the media to stop attacking private companies since their downfall may cause a lot of harm to the society.

“We should stop the attack on businesses, and the attack on corporate world. When covid came, if you did not have a strong foundation, you would collapse and so if these businesses have survived, let us support them. Even when they are wrong, let us find a way to dialogue and see how we can resolve it than using our medium to sell them out, because when businesses collapse, unemployment will increase and armed robbery and gambling will increase and we all stand to be affected,” he added.

For his part, the General Manager of Ashfoam, Mr George A. Massih also pledged his support towards the GJA aspirant, expressing hope that the media will help address their (businesses) challenges.

He noted that the importation of second-hand mattresses had become a major challenge to the industry since it infringes on their businesses.

Despite calls on government to ban the importation of second mattresses, people still sneak in into the country irrespective of the harm it causes to human health.

He also noticed a rise in cyber security threats, especially on social media, calling on the GJA to organize trainings for the media on how to fight cyber security before it escalates.

Mr George A. Massih also noticed that the youth, as young as 7 years have engaged in gambling, a situation he said may affect the country’s development if not addressed in time.

He, therefore, called on the media to help raise awareness on these challenges  in order to get the right institution to address them.

Mr Dwumfour was accompanied by Betty Apau-Oppong, former Director of TV, GTV, Vance Azu, former Night Editor, Daily Graphic, Sika Dzuali, Campaign Secretary, Ekourba Gyasi, TV host, Atinka TV, Ofori Ayim, Atinka FM, Kojo Addo, Atinka FM and Gabriel Bosompem, Campaign Chairman and former Manager, TV3.

Ghanaians are not against First Lady’s salary but… -Former NDC MP

0

A former Member of Parliament for Buem Constituency, Mr Daniel Kosi Ashiamah says Ghanaians are not against the payment of salaries to First and Second Ladies.

According to him, Ghanaians are rather worried about the process and procedure through which the salaries are going to be paid.

The First Lady declined the offer for her to be paid allowances and as well decided to refund all monies paid to her as allowances from the date of the President’s assumption of office, i.e., from January 2017 to date, amounting to GH¢899,097.84.

Her decision was informed by some extremely negative opinions being expressed by some Ghanaians in the raging debate on emoluments for First and Second Ladies.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ekourba Gyasi Simpremu, Mr Daniel Kosi Ashiamah noticed a mistake in the statement by the First Lady, explaining that Ghanaians are not contesting the salaries being paid to the First Lady and the Second Lady but are rather contesting Article 71’s inclusion of the First and Second Ladies.

He said if they (First and Second ladies are paid salaries under Article 71, there will be conflict of process and procedure as far as the Constitution is concerned.

Meanwhile, Mr Kosi Ashiamah said the auditing and procedure to pay them should have been stated clearly.

The Former NDC MP who was not happy about the First and Second Ladies returning their allowances said they shouldn’t have done that.

According to Greater Accra Police PRO, Efia Tengey “on July 11, 2021, at about 4:45 pm, a young lady aged about 23years with Nigerian accent came to the charge office with two packs of Papaye labeled fast food to be served on a robbery remand prisoner in cells.”

“When the food was carefully inspected by the duty officer on duty, a locally manufactured pistol with one aa cartridge was found concealed in one of the packs with the food covering it.”
