A mission to recover allegedly stolen government fertilizer in Anupkenya, a village in the Sege District of the Greater Accra Region, nearly turned fatal as an individual was almost lynched by an angry mob.

The fertilizer, estimated at 2,000 bags, was reportedly procured under the previous administration but had allegedly been hoarded by some New Patriotic Party (NPP) executives and was being sold at GHS 300 per bag instead of being distributed to farmers.

A group of about 30 people, allegedly led by an assembly member from Addo Kope, first stormed the village on Tuesday afternoon with police officers from Kasseh, searching multiple rooms but finding nothing.

Later that evening, around 7:00 p.m., they returned in another attempt to retrieve the fertilizers. However, this time, a confrontation erupted between the group and the local youth, who quickly mobilized support from surrounding areas. The youth managed to capture one suspect, identified as Terkpetey, while the assembly member narrowly escaped after being hidden by a resident.

The Sege District Police Command was called to the scene and took the suspect into custody for investigations.

When questioned by local elders, Terkpetey claimed he was merely an ‘Okada’ rider hired for the operation. However, during an earlier interrogation by the youth, he stated that he had been buying spaghetti at Koluerdor when the group approached him for the job.

The police are currently investigating the incident as tensions remain high in the area.
