Afosu SHS Muslim Students Call for Inclusive Support During Ramadan

Muslim students at New Abirem Afosu Senior High School in Birim North District have appealed for a permanent mosque and more time for daily prayers, highlighting the need for inclusive policies in education in line with Sustainable Development Goal 4 and Sustainable Development Goal 16.

The appeal was made during a donation exercise by the District Chief Executive, Hakeem Abdul Antwi, who presented food items and toiletries to support students observing the holy month of Ramadan.

Students said the lack of a dedicated place of worship and limited time for prayers make it difficult to fully observe their religious obligations while keeping up with academic work. They noted that the situation affects their spiritual well-being and sense of inclusion on campus.

The concerns reflect broader issues of balancing education with religious freedom – an important aspect of creating safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environments.

In response, the District Chief Executive acknowledged the challenges of combining fasting with academic responsibilities and encouraged students to remain focused on their studies while practising their faith.

He further assured them that steps would be taken to address their concerns, including exploring the provision of a permanent mosque and reviewing prayer arrangements.

The appeal underscores the importance of accommodating diversity within Ghana’s education system to ensure that no student is left behind, regardless of religious background.
