Akpaloo dismisses ballot swapping allegation

Founder and leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Dr. Kofi Akpaloo, has strongly denied allegations of swapping his position on the ballot paper with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2024 general election.

The accusations surfaced in a series of videos making rounds on social media, prompting the LPG leader to clarify the situation in an exclusive interview with Atinka TV’s Ebenezer Madugu.

Dr. Akpaloo urged Ghanaians to dismiss these claims, stating that no serious individual would believe them. He described the allegations as a calculated attempt by certain individuals to discredit his candidacy, referring to those spreading the rumors as “mad.” His frustration was evident as he rebuffed the claims as part of an agenda to tarnish his image.

The controversy comes in the wake of last week’s ballot exercise at the Electoral Commission (EC) office, where allegations of ballot swapping had already sparked tension among political parties. The incident has been a hot topic, with suspicions raised about possible manipulations, especially regarding the positions of independent candidates.

Addressing his own ballot position, Dr. Akpaloo, who secured the fifth spot, revealed that he had prayed to avoid a position below number five due to his previous experience in the 2020 election, where he was placed ninth. He expressed disbelief at the accusations, questioning why he would ever consider swapping a better position for a lower one. “Why would I change number one for five? They are not serious,” he said.
