The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Obuasi East, Faustina Amissah, says being ‘hungry’ does not allow the youth to go and intrude someone’s concession to mine illegally.

Her comment follows the trapping of about 300 illegal miners in a pit on a concession belonging to AngloGold Ashanti.

It was reported that over 300 illegal miners had been trapped under AngloGold Ashanti concession at Aweam in Obuasi.

According to reports, the victims have been trapped under the pit for about a week without food or water and no one had come to rescue them.

The miners trapped under the pit at Aweam in Obuasi, accused AngloGold Ashanti of intentionally covering the pit to kill them.

Although they entered the site through unapproved routes, they admitted they did that because of ‘hunger’.

Speaking on Atinka 104.7 FM with Kaakyire Ofoi Ayim amidst the galamsey brouhaha at Obuasi, Faustina Amissah complained that it was not the first time the youth at Obuasi had done that.

She underscored the need for stakeholders to educate the miners on the consequences of their actions, saying that there are times when the miners are engaged and they threaten to break into the homes of their leaders if they are not allowed to mine illegally.

“We should let our people understand that there is hunger and hunger is painful, but hunger does not mean that we should use every illegal means. The means should be legal. So we beg, let us educate the people,” she said.

She said she was going to speak to them (AGA) to employ the youth from Obuasi, admitting that the AGA has not done enough on employing her people.
