A Communications Team Member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ishmael Adams, has stated that Ghanaians have a lackadaisical attitude towards the re-registration of their sim cards and has therefore stated that there should be finality to the re-registration of sim cards.

His comments follow the NCA’s caution to deactivate 11 million unregistered sim cards.

The Director General of the National Communications Authority (NCA), Joe Anokye, stated that the organization will deactivate more than eleven million unregistered Sim cards after May 31, 2023.

According to him, it is now necessary to deactivate such unregistered sim cards in accordance with the Ministry of Communications’ directive.

However, sim cards belonging to diplomats and Ghanaians performing national duties outside the country will not be deactivated.

He also urged Ghanaians and non-Ghanaians residing in the country to register their Sim cards by May 31, 2023, to avoid losing them.

To avoid having their Sim cards revoked, Joe Anokye added, individuals without a Ghana Card must provide evidence that they do not possess one.

Speaking on Atinka TV‘s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ama Gyenfa Ofosu Darkwa, Ishmael Adams said Ghanaians had a reluctant attitude towards the re-registration exercise. However, he was of the belief that as of now, a lot of people have registered.

Ishmael Adams recalled that when the Government gave a deadline for the re-registration of sim cards, the registration centres were full but immediately the government extended the deadline, people stopped registering .

“When can we get to the final point of this registration? Whatever it is, there should be finality to that registration. Today when they end it, people will complain, so when? The disconnection must happen.

He said even if it is extended again from May 31 to 31st December, 2023, people will still not go and re-register their sim cards, adding that people have the documents for the exercise but just don’t want to register.

Meanwhile, he urged those who have not registered to get a new sim card and register before 31st May in order to help NCA to get criminals out of its system.
