‘Bukom Showdown’ to unveil new boxers

The Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra will be the venue for over 20 young boxers to cut their teeth in the first ever monthly boxing series dubbed ‘Bukom Showdown’.

Aged between 14 and 17, these amateur boxers, whose hunger for stardom transcends boundaries, will be the pace-setters in what will become a new monthly boxing series at the arena.

The initiative, which is an alliance involving The Ideal Boxing Alliance, Trust Sports Emporium and Kwese Sports, is expected to galvanise these young lads into action towards perpetual stardom.

One unique feature about the upcoming series is the involvement of professional fighters, who will fight for national titles towards world title shots.

On the bill, bantamweight Albert Commey will face off with Sheriff Mohammed, while a super middleweight contest will see Delali Miledzi taking on Richard Ashong, with a welterweight contest between Justice Addy and Richard Dogbegah climaxing the professional encounter.

The brainchild of Herbert Nii Kpakpo Allotei-Cofie, CEO of Events Unlimited, son of the late WBC vice-president, Nii Cofie Ajenkwa II, alias John Allotei-Cofie, is expected to whip up more interest in the sport.

Some of the boxers on the bill told the Graphic Sports that the career path they had chosen as amateur boxers is a dream come true and that they would go all out to prove their mettle on Saturday night.

The night has been themed by the organisers as “Yaa Bi Ony3”, which literally means: ‘Go ask your mum’, leaving boxing fans in suspense as to what might be in store on Saturday.

The amateur bouts on the bill will witness Africanus Neequaye and Samuel Takyi and Mohammed Ayittey versus Samuel Wilson.

Alfred Kotey will clash with Holy Dogbetor, while Amadu Mohammed challenges Gideon Nortey.

A side-attraction on the night will be the live telecast of the heavyweight bout between Joseph Parker and Anthony Joshua at the ringside.

The final two amateur bouts on the night will see Michael Nelson clashing with Joseph Mensah, and Daniel Selasise Gosh versus Korley Commodore.
