The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo says his promise to build a harbour at Cape Coast while campaigning in the run-up to the 2020 elections was a mistake.

According to him, he was only human and could make a mistake at any point in time, saying the initial plan was not to build a harbour at Cape Coast.

President Akufo Addo, the then Candidate for New Patriotic Party (NPP) promised to build a harbour in the Central Regional capital while campaigning in the run-up to the 2020 elections.

However, later, he said the commitment was never to build a harbour, rather, a landing site.

This certainly did not go well with the people of Cape Coast after their hopes were raised.

During an interview with Peacefm on Thursday, October 21, 2021, the President said,”I made a mistake, in looking at the manifesto, I tried to do that before I went, I saw one page we talked about the landing site and I didn’t go further to see. But in any event, even with the mistake, I think still we have to think about a lot things. We have a harbour at Elmina which is being developed right now. Obviously Takoradi- Elmina, and we have another one projecting from Cape Coast before we go further down to the road.”

He continued that,”I think some re-thinking has to go on for us to find the value for money arrangements but it was a clear mistake and I have to apologise to the people of Cape Coast and the Central Region for that mistake. But Presidents are human. They are not supermen, they make mistakes.”

In 2026, the Komenda Sugar Factory was shut down for maintenance.

It was noted that the raw material –sugarcane- has entered its lean season hence the need to close down the revamped factory for maintenance.

Although the factory was expected to resume operation in October that same year, its operation was halted due to lack of materials.

President Akufo Addo said the factory was shut down because there were no raw materials to feed the factory and not solely for maintenance as claimed.
