In 2026, the Komenda Sugar Factory was shut down for maintenance.

It was noted that the raw material –sugarcane- has entered its lean season hence the need to close down the revamped factory for maintenance.

Although the factory was expected to resume operation in October that same year, its operation was halted due to lack of materials.

President Akufo Addo said the factory was shut down because there were no raw materials to feed the factory and not solely for maintenance as claimed.

He said the whole planning of the factory was wrong from the ‘get go’.

“What the Trade Minister is trying to do is to re-configure the investment in such a way that he has now access to raw material suppliers for the factory,” he said.

The President also said they have made arrangements to supply the raw materials to the factory, adding that it is going to be sustainable if the factory starts working.

“The initial planning never properly incorporated raw material supply into the project, if there had been so, we will not be in this discussion today,” he said.
