Census night was successful- GSS Official

The Head of Census Publicity Education and Advocacy Team, Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), Mr Francis Nyarkoh Larbi, says the 2021 census night was successfully carried out as expected by the Service.

The Census night was held on Sunday, June 27, 2021 to mark the official start of the 2021 Population and Housing Census.

Persons who were targeted on the night were those who were traveling long distance travelers, those in the hospital, those who traveled to Ghana from abroad and were lodging at guest houses and hotels.

In the Korle Klottey Municipality of the Greater Accra Region for instance, there was a float through the major streets to create awareness about the exercise.

Same colourful event was held at different places across the country.

On Monday, persons who will be enumerated are the President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, the Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Prof. Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, Former President, John Dramani Mahaha, Former President John Agyekum Kufour, and the Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana, Rev. Dr. Paul Kwame Boafo.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie with Abena Dufie Asare Adjepong, Mr Francis Nyarkoh Larbi clarified that the exercise does not restrict anyone from their movements, hence moving around to enumerate everyone including those who are homeless.

“Census does not restrict anyone. That is why we did not tell anyone not to travel and we went to the people by going to places like bus terminals and the Airport to count the people,” he said.

Meanwhile, he said every Census Official will go to houses they have already been to so that they can enumerate residents for the next two weeks.

The 2021 Population and Housing Census, which will run till July 11, 2021, is meant to generate data that will be used in decision-making and planning for the development of the country and its citizens.
