Civil Society Organization, SEND Ghana has raised alarm over the increasing spread of cholera across Ghana and the rising cases of meningitis in the northern regions.

The group is calling on the government to take immediate and decisive action to contain the outbreak and strengthen the country’s public health emergency preparedness.

The cholera outbreak, which first emerged in the Western and Central regions in October, 2024, has steadily spread to other areas, including the Eastern, Greater Accra, and Northern regions.

Meanwhile, the cases of meningitis are surging in the northern parts of the country, posing a serious public health threat.

In a statement, signed by Mumuni Mohammed, the Deputy Country Director of SEND Ghana, the organization urged the Ghana Health Service (GHS) to swiftly equip its Health Promotion Unit with the necessary resources to launch an extensive public education campaign.

The group insists that public awareness efforts must leverage traditional media, social media, and community information centers to educate citizens on prevention and control measures.

Beyond immediate containment efforts, SEND Ghana is also advocating for the government to make urgent budgetary allocations to curb the spread of these diseases.

The organization is also calling for the establishment of a sustainable Public Health Emergency Fund, which would ensure a rapid and well-coordinated response to future disease outbreaks at both the national and district levels.

“A well-funded public health emergency system will guarantee a swift response, minimize casualties, and protect lives,” SEND Ghana stated, urging the  government to prioritize investments in Ghana’s disease prevention and preparedness systems.

Again, the Organization in the meantime, has encouraged all Ghanaians to adhere strictly to health protocols and guidance provided by the Ghana Health Service.

Public cooperation, the group stresses, is crucial to preventing further loss of lives.

SEND Ghana reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for a robust and resilient public health system, pledging to continue engaging stakeholders to ensure a safer and healthier Ghana for all.
