Confirmed: 5 perish in freak accident at Bunso Junction

Five persons died on the spot in an accident that occurred at Bunso junction on the Accra- Kumasi highway of the Eastern Region.

The accident which occurred around 11:30am yesterday was said to have occurred when a tipper truck failed its breaks whilst descending from the Asiakwa junction.

This made the driver lost control and rammed into other vehicles.

Several people who sustained serious injuries were rushed to the Osiem, New Tafo and Kyebi hospitals.

Three of the deceased have been deposited at the New Tafo Hospital mortuary, while the other two have been sent to the Kyebi Hospital mortuary for autopsy.

The Eastern Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) Commander, Chief Superintendent Prince Jude Kobina who confirmed the incident to the Ghanaian Times said the tipper truck driver on realising that his vehicle with registration number GT 6246-11 has failed its breaks tried to the honk to alert other drivers.

He said unfortunately the drivers were driving in “a bumper to bumper fashion – too close to one another” – adding that there was no way they could have veered out of the road.

The tipper truck driver drove into a Sprinter vehicle with registration number GX 3787-13 and a cargo vehicle also with registration number AS 9153-C killing the deceased on the spot.

He said the police who arrived at the scene rushed the injured to the said hospitals for treatment whilst the deceased have been deposited at the mortuaries of the New Tafo and Kyebi Hospitals.
