Council of State elections: Here are the winners

Council of State

The Council of State elections was held on Tuesday, February 11, 2025 in all 16 regions of the country.

155 candidates, 145 males and 10 females contested the elections.

Two persons, drawn out of 261 Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies(MMDAs) across the country voted to elect the Members of the Council of state.

After their election, Members of the Council of state will be required to advise the President critical national issues and some appointments.

GREATER ACCRA

In the Greater Accra Region, Barimah Kwaku Saakwah reported that Nene Drolor Bosso Adamtey won the election with 40 votes.

Although the elections involved 13 candidates, prior to voting, three aspirants, Obed Nyarko, Albert Borketey Naawu and Musah Ziyad stepped down, narrowing the number of aspirants to 10.

NORTHERN REGION

In the Northern Region, Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni, a Former Member of Parliament for the Kumbungu constituency and Foreign Affairs Minister, was elected the Council of State Member for the Region. 

He secured 26 votes out of a total of 32 votes cast during the elections held on February 11, 2025, at the Northern Regional Coordinating Council.

The elections, which were largely attended by members of the governing National Democratic Congress, saw Alhaji Mumuni emerge victorious among four contenders. 

Richard Andani Yakubu came second with 4 votes, while Nyande Abdul Raqib secured 2 votes. Adam Hussein, unfortunately, had no votes.

Alhaji Mumuni’s impressive track record in Ghanaian politics, including his tenure as Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration from 2009 to 2013, likely contributed to his electoral success.

UPPER WEST REGION

In the Upper West Region, the NDC Regional 1st Vice Chairman, Michael Kwame Mumuni, was elected Upper West Regional Council of State member.

Mr Believer, popularly called, pulled 8 out of the 22 votes, beating his closest contender, Dimah Gbene, who had 7 votes.

Mr Michael Mumuni is the current 1st vice chairman of the ruling NDC for the second term.

Michael Kwame Mumuni promised to tackle Roads network, Agriculture and education to help build the Upper West Region, as a Vice Chairman for a ruling party and being elected as a Council of State Member he will do everything possible to uplift the image of the upper west region he stated.

VOLTA REGION

At a Volta Region, Edward Sebbie reports that a young Businessman, Gabriel Dovoe Kwabla Kwamigah-Atokple, emerged winner of the Council of State election. 

Mr. Kwamigah-Atokple, popularly known as Tanko, garnered 24 out of the 36 total votes cast to win the Volta Regional Council of State race, with his closest contender, Azi Ganyo obtaining Five (5) votes. 

The sentiment, however, was the rife monetary and material inducements which characterized the elections making many to disregard it as election. 

A former Staff of Bank of Ghana who also contested, Dr. David Kofi Wuaku, who had Four votes registered his displeasure over happenings in the lead up to the elections calling for a reset.

OTI REGION

At the Oti Region, the Legon Cities Bankroller, Richard Kiings Atikpo was re-elected as Council of State Member.

CENTRAL REGION

At the Central Region, Agyei Kwamu Mensah reported that the NDC Constituency Chairman for the Twifo Atti Morkwa Constituency, Hakeem Addae was elected as the Council of State Member to represent the Central Region.

The election was held between 10 candidates with 44 delegates.

At the end of the polls,Chairman Hakeem Addae was crowned as victorious at the end of the election.

Speaking in an interview with media, newly elected Council Of State Member, Hakeem Addae pledged to foster development with his position.

He said he will lobby for development in the Central Region as a Council of State Member.

He promised to work hand in hand with President John Dramani Mahama to foster development in the Region.

EASTERN REGION

In the Eastern Region, Maame Akosua Larbi reported that the former Eastern Regional Organiser of the National Democratic Congress, Madam Evelyn Korang was elected as the Council of state representative in the Region. 

She is the first female to be elected to the Council of State Member position in the Region.

She contested with other 24 aspirants including  the chief of  Kwahu Obomeng Nana Effa Penamang.

She polled 17 votes out of the 66 polls.

The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Awatey earlier commended the people for showing interest  to contest the elections.

Meanwhile, the newly elected  Member, Evelyn Korang called for unity and  pledged to support the welfare of Assembly Members and the region as a whole.
