Dr. Justice Yankson, Vice President for the Ghana Medical Association (GMA), has revealed that Ghana’s Covd-19 case count is likely to triple after the Christmas festivities.
The country is beginning to experience a rise in the number of covid-19 cases.
A statement by the GMA has called for a scale-up in testing of Covid-19 and contact tracing as the country’s Covid-19 cases rise.
The statement, co-signed by President Dr Frank Serebour and General Secretary Dr Titus Beyuo on , warned government to expedite actions to enhance contact tracing else risk weakening further the already fragile health system.
GMA added that the escalation in cases is likely driven by the Omicron variant of the SARS-COV-2 virus which is highly proving to be more transmissible than the hitherto dreaded Delta variant which dominated our third wave of Covid-19.

The Association says it is worried about the development of mass gathering at events and celebrations to mark the Christmas and New Year festivities, this according to the GMA will double the growing infection among the population.
Commenting on the issue in an interview with host of Atinka FM’s AM Drive, GMA Vice President, Dr. Justice Yankson stated that the numbers are going up due to the nature of the covid-19 omicron variant.
He added that if care is not taken the country will be hit by a 4th wave of the covid-19 after the Christmas festivities.
“The numbers are going up and it was expected due to the nature of the omicron variant. We need to enhance education on the need to ensure the safety protocols including the social distancing and the hand washing protocols. if care is not taken the country will be hit by a 4th wave of the covid-19 after the Christmas festivities. ,” Dr. Justice Yankson added.
