Current Black Stars team “has everything but lacks commitment”-Polo

Former Ghanaian international football player, Alhaji Mohammed Ahmed alias Mohammed Polo says the current Black Stars team has been provided with everything they need but they lack commitment.

According to him, during their (Black Stars in the 60s and 70s) time of play, they did not allow money to influence them, saying that it was rather about sacrificing for the country.

His comments follows the abysmal performance of the Ghana Black Stars at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) being held at Côte d’Ivoire.

Ghana’s qualification into the knockout stage of the tournament appears shaky after failing to win any of its games.

The Black Stars lost to Mozambique at Abidjan’s Alassane Ouattara Stadium during a match in their final Group B Match.

Ghana took an initial lead with two goals but within the added time of 6 minutes, Mozambique scored 2 goals, settling for a draw.

This made Ghanaians very furious with some supporters expressing their frustrations after the match.

Speaking on Atinka TV’s morning show, Ghana Nie with Ama Gyenfa Ofosu Darkwa, Mohammed said even at the time his team won the cup for Ghana, he was ill but he stood up to play for his country to win the tournament.

He said there was something wrong with the team, saying all officials from head-to-toe should be blamed for the current state of the Black Stars.

Meanwhile, he underscored the need to give other players the chance, especially local players.

He said technically, the team has a problem questioning why the coach made changes at the last minute.

Mohammed Polo also said the Coach, Chris Hughton, is not up to the task, adding that his performance is very poor.

Despite the current state of the team, he does not believe it should be dissolved completely, adding that all hope is not lost.

Rather, he recommended that the team looks for solutions, stressing that using more local players will do Ghana good than harm.

“When you look at the other countries, they all have a pattern, what is our pattern? We have to involve more local players, have a standing national team, starting with the local players, and groom them to play every week,” he said.

Mohammed Polo again said a local coach is needed to salvage the situation, adding he is available to serve without ‘dictation’ from the ‘big men’.
