Deal swiftly with IGP’s removal in leaked tape- Gyampo tells Akufo Addo

Prof Gyampo

A senior lecturer at the University of Ghana and Political Scientist, Professor Ransford Gyampo, has asked the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to swiftly deal with the rumours regarding the plan to sack the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

This comment by Gyampo comes after a 50 minutes leaked audio, supposedly featuring some senior police officers engaging in a conversation with a prominent party figure, went viral.

In the leaked audio that has gone viral, the alleged officers labeled the IGP as a member of the opposing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The supposed commissioner is heard telling the politician that the IGP is too firm and will not allow machinations in next year’s polls if he is not removed.

He further notes that the nature of security the IGP provided during the Assin North by election shows he will not allow any rigging in the polls.

“This IGP won’t help us. He won’t, he wants everything to be done fairly and we don’t win elections that way. If we don’t remove him we can’t break the 8, in politics we need machinations and this IGP won’t allow that,” the commissioner is heard saying on the leaked audio.

Reacting to the audio in a Facebook post, Professor Ransford Gyampo called on the Akufo-Addo led administration to address the rumours regarding the plan to sack the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The educationist was of the view that it would be politically suicidal for the NPP to think about removing the IGP for being over competent.

“It would be politically suicidal for the NPP as a party and the Akufo-Addo government to think about removing the IGP for being too competent. But if this is not their thinking, why can’t they swiftly dissociate themselves from the rumors?” he explained.
