Dep Special Prosecutor nominee proposes 'plea bargaining' to speed up cases

The Deputy Special Prosecutor nominee, Cynthia Lamptey, has proposed an adjournment cap in court to curb unnecessary delays in the legal system.

She told the Appointments Committee during her vetting Wednesday that urgent steps should be taken to speed up justice delivery in the country.

According to her, adjournments are used in delaying case and that “there must be regulation where a number of adjournments are specified,”

Madam Lamptey , who has practised for close to three decades, said  plea bargaining could be employed  in criminal cases.

She said Plea bargaining “will shorten the period in handling cases and save clients in saving more money.”

“If you agree depending on the issue of the case and plead for a lesser offence it will save you,” she added.

The Deputy Special Prosecutor nominee will assist her boss, Martin Amidu to fight corruption in the country.
