During an intelligence-led operation in Dzorwulu, Accra, the Kotobabi District Police Command apprehended two alleged street robbers.
On January 14, 2026, the suspects were taken into custody after they were spotted riding an unregistered black Royal 125 motorcycle by police on a normal motorcycle patrol.
Police identified the suspects as Stephen Gletsu, 37, the motorbike rider, and Mohammed Sheriff, 20, the pillion rider.
Both men were reportedly dressed in black and wore black helmets, with the pillion rider allegedly armed with a cutlass. They attempted to flee after spotting police officers, prompting a pursuit.
Police say warning shots were fired during the pursuit, causing the suspects to fall from the motorbike near Roman Ridge, close to the Nigerian High Commission.
The two attempted to flee on foot but were arrested by the patrol team. Officers recovered multiple mobile phones, cash and a necklace during a search.
Exhibits retrieved include several mobile phones — among them iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 13, iPhone 12 Pro and Samsung A21 — as well as feature phones, a necklace, GH¢2,690.00 and USD2.
Police said the suspects suffered varying degrees of injuries during the arrest and were treated and discharged at the Police Hospital.
The police statement said the suspects admitted during interrogation to committing robberies and attacking multiple unsuspecting victims within the Accra Metropolis.
Several victims have since provided statements, identifying both the suspects and the stolen mobile phones, and recounting how they were attacked with a machete and robbed of their phones, cash and other belongings.
The Accra Regional Police Command says it remains committed to fighting street robbery and other crimes in the metropolis.
The statement was signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, the region’s Head of Public Affairs.
