East Legon Hills: Several structures pulled down as battle over land rages; residents flee

Several structures at various development stages at East Legon Hills were pulled down this morning with bulldozers by a team of taskforce ably supported by some suspected land guards who were wielding guns and machetes.

It is not clear what provoked this morning’s attack, however reports indicate that the 5.3 acres of land in question has been a source of contention between one Frank Ashidam, an estate developer and Samuel Laryea, a claimant to the land.

According to reports, the Greater Accra Regional Command had instructed both parties to use the courts to settle issues amicably since they were all laying claim to the land.

It is not clear what might have informed this morning’s attack which saw several residents and developers in the area fleeing for their lives.

According to Mr Frank Ashidam, a renowned contractor, the land in question was acquired by him some 35 years ago of which he was the first person to settle in that area and even brought

some social amenities to that community.

He said he was taken aback recently when one Samuel Laryea started laying claim to the land on the premise that there was a High Court ruling adjudicating the land to the people of Ashalley Botwe Traditional Area and not that of the Nungua Traditional Council where Mr Ashidam claimed to have bought it from.

Backing his claim with two Appeals Court ruling that squashed the supposed High Court ruling, Mr Ashidam blamed the current happenings on some officers at the Greater Accra Regional Police command for supporting the said Samuel Laryea to lay claim of a property be has no documentation on. He said this morning’s attack on innocent residents by thugs led by one Sairki Saani and the former were supervised by some police personnel.

Meanwhile attempt to contact the police officer in charge of the case, chief inspector Nutakor of the Accra Regional Police Command has hit a snag as he was unavailable for comment as at press time.
