Elluibo: Galamsey chief “allowed” illegal miners to operate freely – Assemblyman reveals  

Obed Kyere, Assembly Member for Elluibo Electoral Area, has revealed that the arrested Chief of Sefwi Elubo in the Western North Region granted permission to persons to indulge in illegal mining in the area.

Nana Anini Baffour, Chief of Sefwi Elluibo in the Western North Region, was arrested along with his brother, Kwadwo Affi, for illegal mining activities known locally as Galamsay.

According to a police statement, the suspects were apprehended after an investigation into a video that circulated on social media showing illegal mining activities in some compound houses in town.

Six other suspects are being sought by police as part of ongoing investigations, according to the statement.

“The suspects, Nana Anini Baffour and his brother Kwadwo Affi were arrested following Police investigation of a video circulating on social media showing illegal mining activities in some compound houses of the town.

Investigation has so far discovered dug-out pits from the compound leading to the bedroom of the chief’s brother”, the statement said.

Speaking on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, Obed Kyere, Assembly Member for Elluibo Electoral Area, mentioned that per information available to him, Nana Anini Baffour aided persons who wanted to engage in illegal mining.

Asked whether or not the embattled chief was mining in his house as widely reported, Obed Kyere, Assembly Member for Elluibo Electoral Area said the Chief does not reside in the said house where the dug-outs pits were uncovered.

“The Chief lives in Juabuso, he doesn’t live in the compound where the dug-outs pits were uncovered. I was informed that it was one of the arrested persons who mentioned the Chief’s name when he was asked where he got the permission to engage in the illegal mining,” Obed Kyere added.
