Filmmaker explores Ghana birthplace of boxing

Ghana

Filmmaker Priscilla Owusu has explored the history of boxing in Ghana’s Bukom town in her documentary.

The documentary, The City of Bukom, looks into the town that is the birthplace of many boxing world champions.

Owusu explores the challenges the town faces in its attempt to keep the conveyor belt of world champions turning.

“Trying to obtain archive footage was hard and this is why it is so vital to document our history,” she told the BBC’s Focus on Africa.

Owusu lived up to the resilience of Bukom boxers during the production as her footage was accidentally deleted and she had to retrieve it and edit the documentary from scratch.

Ghana has produced several world champions in boxing and Bukom’s boxing history dates back to the 1950s.

Ghanaians protest against controversial e-tax bill

Ghanaians took to the streets of the capital city Accra on Thursday to demonstrate against a controversial bill introducing a tax on electronic transactions sponsored by the government.

The parliament is yet to pass the bill, which introduces a 1.75% tax on all money transactions above 100 cedis ($15; £11).

The majority leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu said the bill was the basis for several estimates in the 2022 budget, which parliament had approved.

The opposition has described the tax as “daylight robbery” and pledged to scrap it should it assume power in the next elections.

The government says the levy will help it deliver crucial services and improve infrastructure, but critics say it will raise the cost of living.
