Galamsey : NDC calls for removal of Akufo-Addo as Co-Chair of "UN SDGs Advocates”

The Opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it will petition the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, to revoke the appointment of President Akufo-Addo as Co-Chair of the SDG Advocates.
According to the party, President Akufo-Addo has failed to show genuine commitment to the fight against illegal mining and the protection of the environment in his own backyard.
President, Nana Addo Darkwa Akufo-Addo in March 2017, established the inter-ministerial committee on illegal mining to sanitize and curb the menace of illegal mining.
The President, believed that constant and effective monitoring and reporting of anti-galamsey activities would ensure that the right things were done at all times adding, “This new phase will demonstrate our resilience and commitment to ensuring that our water bodies, land and forests with their biodiversity, are not destroyed”.
At a press conference at the banks of River Pra in the Central Region, National Commmunications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, said the corrupt government of President Akufo -Addo has become an active enabler and promoter of the “galamsey” menace and the destruction of the environment in a way that affronts the SDGs of the United Nations.
“He has proven to be unfit for the prestigious position of Co-Chair of the UN SDGs Advocates, for which reason he must be removed without delay. And, we are absolutely convinced beyond doubt, that the United Nations will act in the interest of the Ghanaian people, the international community and the environment,” he added.
