GHS embarks on Yellow Fever mass vaccination November 12

Ghana Health Service (GHS) has embarked on a one -week yellow fever mass vaccination in some selected communities in Ghana.

Yellow fever is an acute viral hemorrhagic disease transmitted by infected mosquitoes. Up to 50% of severely affect persons without treatment will die from yellow fever.

Ghana Health Service in a statement noted that the Greater Accra Region is vaccinating eligible people from 10 years and to 60 years in five out of the eighty five districts in Ghana namely, Ada West, Ada East, La Dade-Kotopon, Ga Central and Kpone Katamanso.

The statement added that the vaccination will be conducted at fixed immunization posts, which will be located permanently during the 7- day period in health facilities in other areas and that mobile posts will move to communities where they may be located in schools, churches, mosques, bus stops, barriers and market areas to vaccinate people.

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has, however, asked the general public to take note of adverse effects such as pain at the site of the injection, muscle pain, itching, headache difficulty in breathing and sudden collapse and report according.

The vaccination against yellow fever is effective today 12th to 18th November 2020 and is free for all persons with the exception of pregnant women, persons with immune deficiency problem and persons on anti-cancer treatment and persons on steroid treatment.

“ Anybody in the selected communities mentioned should visit the nearest health or vaccination post for vaccination. The public is assured that the Yellow Fever vaccine is safe and  it is given as an injection. The vaccine is effective and protects you. It is advised that everyone protects him\herself from mosquito bites by sleeping under insecticide treated nets and keep his or her surrounding clean,” the statement added.
