GJA calls for free transport, other incentives for media

The President for the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Mr. Affial Monney has appealed to government to include the media in the provision of stimulus packages such as free transport among others being given to frontline workers in Ghana’s fight against covid-19.

He argued that media practitioners are frontline workers in the fight against the covid-19 pandemic as the media has come into contact with carries and well as Coronavirus patients in their reportage.

Mr Affail Monney who made this appeal when the association organized a joint press conference with the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA) and PRINPAG said media workers are at risk just like health workers.

He called on the government to arrange Aayalolo buses for media buses just like it’s being done for health workers.

This comes after the Ministry of Transport was tasked by government to make available, for free, ‘Aayalolo’ buses to convey health workers in Accra, Tema, Kumasi and Kasoa to and from work, along specific routes, for the entire duration of the restrictions.

“Another issue of interest is the scramble for recognition by all manner of professional groups as frontline workers in the fight against coronavirus. True, by virtue of what they do, the endless working hours they endure and the exigencies of the assignments they undertake, the media do not need any defintion as frontline workers,” Affail Monney said.

The GJA, however, commended some selected media houses including Atinka Media Village for the extensive and outstanding covid-19 media coverage and reportage.
