GPHA suspends cruise ships, tourists at ports

The Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has placed strict measures in place to prevent the spread of the coronavirus epidemic at the ports.
GPHA has suspended docking of cruise ships at the ports as well as students and groups who tour the ports.
This development comes after Health authorities last Sunday afternoon announced that six cases of the disease have been recorded in the country.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo Sunday evening announced that all public gatherings, including conferences, workshops, funerals, festivals, political rallies, sporting events and religious activities, such as services in churches and mosques, are to be suspended for the next four (4) weeks.
Speaking on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Ekourba Gyasi, the General Manager, Marketing and Corporate Affairs of GPHA, Mrs. Esther Gyebi-Donkor explained that aside the airports, the ports are also at risk with respect to the epidemic.
According to her, large number of persons onboard cruise ships which dock at the various ports in the country have been suspended indefinitely.
“The Ports receive clubs, schools, and individuals who come to tour the ports in their quest to experience life at the ports, this have been suspended indefinitely. We also receive cruise ships with quite huge number of people on board from countries, henceforth cruise ships from high-risk countries has also been suspended until further notice,” she added.
She, however, noted that cargo ships will be off-loaded under stringent supervision.
According to her, GPHA has taken upon itself to educate the ports community on the epidemic and ways to stop its spread.
